Hello parents,
Thank you for all you do to continue to support your child and our school. Below is some
information about what we are doing in our class this week! Please try to reinforce this at home
to help ensure success for your child.
Reading: We are continuing to learn how to monitor and self-correct as we read. Three
important areas of fluency are: accuracy, speed, and expression. Draw attention to these areas
as you read with your child. We will also learn about the sounds of “ed”: “t” as in jumped, “d”
as in “played”, and “ed” as in folded. We will learn the sounds of “y”, y as in yo-yo, “e” as in
happy, and “i” as in shy as well.
Writing:
We are working on Realistic Fiction stories, with emphasis on character development and
adding details for interest. The four elements of this genre include Setting, Characters, Problem,
and Solution. When they are writing, you can ask your student what their story is about and
who their characters are, and give them ideas (or questions) they would like to "know" about
when reading their stories. For example, if the story takes place at the pool, what type of day is
it, is it crowded at the pool, who is there, etc. to provide more details.
Math:
We are going to start our Problem Solving unit. We will be solving number and word problems
with addition and subtraction strategies. Have your students practice writing number sentences
such as: 2+5=7 or 6-4=2.
Content:
We are continuing to work on our US symbols and famous Americans unit. We will be studying
George Washington, Eleanor Roosevelt, Ben Franklin, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington
Carver.
Word Study:
New words come home on Monday. Please practice these every night, the features are getting
harder and students should be noticing them in their reading and writing!
Questions to ask your child:
Who are some famous Americans and what contributions did they make?
What are the three sounds of “ed” and “y”?
Practice addition and subtraction.
Reminders:
We are going to be going outside to recess more often, be sure to bundle up your little ones!
