F.Y.I. Mrs. Talkington’s Weekly Update! September 28, 2015 As always we have had a super busy week. The students have finished their unit on citizenship, and patterns and now we are working on American Symbols and number sense. Thank you to all of my volunteers who have been helping within the classroom and at home projects. There are always opportunities for volunteers! Here are some things you need to know. Homework will officially start next Monday. The students have learned the procedures for word work and should be ready to teach you how to do it. Stay tuned for next week’s sorts and homework journals. In addition Dream Box will be included in the weekly homework assignments. If your child does not have his/her passwords memorized, please let me know and I will try to send those home with the homework journals. The first grade web site has word wall words flash cards made for your convenience. I am going to send home a spelling practice packet with many ideas for learning these high frequency words. I would suggest down loading the first quarter words and possibly keep them in a shoe box (along with the word packet) for safe keeping. As your child learns the words, you can throw them away. On Wednesday an October calendar and reading journal will be sent home. If your student completed this month’s reading journal, they are eligible for a prize. In addition, the September calendars must be brought back no later than this Wednesday. This should not be a problem, as all students should always have their calendars in their daily folders. Mrs. Rogstad will be in to help with the certificates and prizes. Scholastic Magazines will be sent home in the Thursday folder. All reading orders need to be sent back by October 16th. Next week be on the lookout for these items. I will tell you that there will be homework every night (this may only be reading), but I do expect the children to learn this responsibility. With your help we can make this a positive task. If you have not had a chance to check my website (to see if you are listed on our class directory), or if the information is incorrect, please let me know. This is your main means of being able to contact class friends in order to arrange play dates.
