Fifth Grade Plans Third Nine Weeks 2013-2014 English / Language Arts Oral Language SOL 5.1 Students will listen, draw conclusions, and share responses in subject-related group learning activities. SOL 5.2 Students will use effective nonverbal communication skills. SOL 5.3 Students will make planned oral presentations Reading SOL 5.4 Students will read fiction and nonfiction with fluency and accuracy. Use context to clarify meaning of unfamiliar words. Use knowledge of root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Use dictionary, glossary, thesaurus, and other word-reference materials. SOL 5.5 Students will read and demonstrate comprehension of fiction. Describe the relationship between text and previously read materials. Describe character development in fiction and poetry selections. Describe the development of plot and explain how conflicts are resolved. SOL 5.6 Students will read and demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction. Use text organizers, such as type, headings, and graphics, to predict and categorize information. Identify structural patterns found in nonfiction. Locate information to support opinions, predictions, and conclusions. Identify cause-and-effect relationships. Identify compare-and-contrast relationships. SOL 5.7 Students will demonstrate comprehension of information from a variety of print resources. Develop notes that include important concepts, summaries, and identification of information sources. Organize information on charts, maps, and graphs. Writing SOL 5.8 Students will write for a variety of purposes. Choose planning strategies for various writing purposes. Organize information. Use precise and descriptive vocabulary to create tone and voice. Vary sentence structure. Revise writing for clarity. Use available technology to access information. SOL 5.9 Students will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Use adjective and adverb comparisons. Use commas to indicate interrupters and in the salutation/closing of a letter. Edit for clausal fragments, run-on sentences, and excessive coordination. Spelling Students will participate in a word study program that focuses on word patterns and origins. Teachers will monitor student developmental spelling abilities to determine spelling patterns to be studied. Students will proofread all writing for misspelled words. Math SOL 5.9 Students will identify and describe diameter, radius, chord and circumference. SOL 5.11 Students will measure right, acute, obtuse, and straight angles. SOL 5.12a Students will classify right, acute, obtuse and straight angles. SOL 5.12b Students will classify right, acute, obtuse, equilateral, scalene, and isosceles triangles. SOL 5.13a Students will define plane figures (square, rectangle, triangle, parallelogram, rhombus, and trapezoid) SOL 5.13b Students will find results of combining and subdividing plan figures. Social Studies Students will: identify and describe the geographic regions of the United States; locate and identify the water features important to the early history of the United States; and learn the states and capitals of the United States (ongoing throughout the school year). Students will continue with the Northeast region of the United States and then begin to study the Southeast region and what makes each one unique Science SOL 5.5 Cells and Organization of Living Things: Key concepts include: a) parts of cells b) c) d) e) f) five kingdoms vascular/nonvascular vertebrates/invertebrates parts of a plant ecology/human impact SOL 5.4 Matter: The student will investigate and understand that matter is anything that has mass; takes up space; and occurs as a solid, liquid or a gas.
