Textbook:
Biology by Miller and Levine, 2002. (used only as a reference)
Materials:
 2 2 ½ inch three ring binders (one for class content; one for research project)
 12 Dividers (one for each unit)
 Pen and pencils
Academic Expectations: Set your goals high and constantly strive to accomplish them.
Do your best! This is a course that requires a lot of motivation. Students will need to be
responsible for keeping up with assignments.
Tests/ Projects
Labs/ Independent
Research Project
Homework/ Class work
Quizzes/ Bellringers
Grading Scale:
A
98-100= A+
93-97= A
90-92= A-
There will be an assessment at the end of every unit. The
format may consist of multiple choice, short answer, true/false,
labeling, lab application skills, and/or group projects. If you are
not satisfied with the score on your test, you can schedule a
time to do test corrections. When you correct the question, you
will get half a credit back for every question that is correct. You
have until the next unit test to do test corrections.
Biology is a lab- based science, so there will be 1 or more labs
per unit. Labs will be conducted in class. A 3 ring binder will
be kept with all independent research progress.
Homework will be due at the beginning of the class on the due
date. Unfinished class work may result in homework.
There will be periodic quizzes throughout each unit to check for
your understanding of the material. There will be a bellringer at
the beginning of each period that counts toward your quiz
grade. The bellringers are old SOL questions that will help you
prepare for the SOL in May.

Late Work:
One of your primary responsibilities as a student is to turn in homework on time.
Homework assignments are due at the beginning of class on the due date. Any
assignment turned in after the due date will drop one letter grade (10%) for every
day it is missed. Assignments will be accepted up to 2 class periods after the due
date resulting in no less than 20% taken off. After this date, the assignment may still
be turned in for feedback, but will result in a zero for the grade. Assignments will be
accepted up to one day after the unit test. Late work policy applies to all work
including the Independent Research Project (IRP).
Absences:
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up any missed assignments.
Check your folder for missed work stapled to While You Were Out sheet. The
scope and sequence, notes, assignments and their due dates will be posted on the
class website. They will be due the next class period. If you are absent for a test,
you are expected to make up the test. Appointments must be scheduled ahead of
time to come before or after school.
Expectations:
 Arrive to class on time
 Be respectful of others
 Come to class prepared



Ask Questions/ Participate
Don’t give up
Food/ drink/ gum free room
Inappropriate Behavior:
Safety Shower- Students are not permitted to pull the safety shower handle unless it is
an emergency. Any violation of this policy will result in time spent cleaning the room and an
additional 10 hours of community service for the science department.
Emergency Button- Students are not permitted to push the red emergency button in the
front of the room. Any violation of this policy will result in immediate disciplinary action from
administration.
Vandalism- The science rooms were recently renovated. Please take care of all
furniture and equipment. Any violation of this policy will result in immediate disciplinary action
from administration.
Extra Credit:
Extra credit is a privilege, not a right. It will be assigned when the opportunity arises, but is
at my discretion.
Cheating/Plagiarism:
Plagiarism and cheating result in an automatic zero on any assignment and sent to the
Honor Code Committee. Plagiarism includes not citing your source correctly. Cheating
includes copying someone else’s work or letting other people copy your work. There will
be a lot of group work during labs in this class, but everyone must turn in their own work in
their own words.
Independent Research Project:
Independent research is a required element of the honors class. Each quarter there will be
inquiry based lab assignments guiding the students through scientific investigation. In the
spring, each student will present their findings as a class presentation and during a school
wide science symposium. 15 students will be selected to compete in the Regional science
fair in March 2015.
