Social Studies: Economics
Science: Seasonal Changes: Winter
Math: Show Me the Money
Addition Strategies/Facts to 18
HomeFun: Here are a few reminders: Please
make sure that you use pencil for all written
assignments. Your child is responsible for
independently remembering to pack up
their belongings at the end of each school
day. Thank you for encouraging
responsibility and independence.
Daily Communication Folder: Take time to
check the green folder every day. Please
label all lunch money with your child’s first &
last name as well as their number. Thanks!
I wanted to thank each of you who thought
of me during the holidays. I am truly blessed
to have such thoughtful students and parents.
I appreciate all the gifts for the classroom and
the gift cards!
Mid Year Assessments
I will begin informal reading, spelling, writing and
math assessment next week.
These assessments will be used to regroup your child
according to his or her ability. I try to individualize as
much as possible, so your child is working at a level
that fits their capabilities. I am happy to share those
results once completed.
The reading assessments will be used to determine if
your child is reading below, at or above grade level
for the report card. A first grader needs to be
reading at a level 10 or G by the end of the quarter.

Reminders
 Please remember to make sure your child
reads their assignment each night. I know
I’ve said this in previous communications,
but I’ll continue to say it: reading nightly with
a parent is vital to how much your child
improves this year. Assignments shouldn’t
take more than 15 minutes at most. If it’s
more than that, please let me know. Please
keep in mind that it’s better to read
something that is too easy than something
that is too hard. If they miss more than 5
words per page, that book is not right for
them. I’m here if you have any questions.
Mid-year reading testing will start next week
so new groups and levels will be determined.
 It is time to incorporate another important
component of our math program. Once a
week your child will begin taking timed
addition facts tests. Students are expected
to complete 50 problems in 5 minutes. Each
child will have the opportunity to progress
at their own pace. Flash cards are a great
way to practice for these drills.
 We try to go outside for recess and laps
each day. Please send your child to school
with winter coat, hats and gloves. Thank
you!
