It is not used by the grower. Tobacco was a cash crop in Virginia. Virginia became a big agricultural colony. Tobacco was a source of income for the settlers. In order to grow lots of tobacco many workers were needed. The workers were slaves. VS.4a-d Why was the capital moved from Jamestown to Williamsburg? Drinking water was contaminated with salt water. Dirty living conditions caused disease. Fire destroyed buildings at Jamestown. Williamsburg was at a higher elevation. The population was moving westward. Why was the capital moved from Williamsburg to Richmond? Richmond's location was better for trade. Richmond was a more central location. Richmond was more protected from attack by the English. What is barter? This is the trading of goods and services without the use of money. What is credit? This is the buying of a good or service now and paying for it later. What is money? This is a medium of exchange. It includes coins and bills. VS.4a-d What is savings? This is money put away to be used at a later time. What is debt? This is goods or money owed to another person. What did people use instead of money to "buy" goods? They bartered. They used tobacco. How did farmers pay their debts? They would "buy" goods on credit and pay when they sold their crops. Did people use banks to save money? There were NO banks in colonial Virginia.
