2/21/12 Period 8 Impact of the great depression My Life as a Mother During the Great Depression Times are getting harder, men are losing their jobs and it’s becoming harder and harder for my husband to make enough money. Food is becoming more expensive, and people have resorted to thievery as a way to survive. I have begun searching for work despite my husband’s protests, I refuse to have my children suffer if I can do anything about it. Work has been easier for women to find so my fingers are crossed. I have found work as a house keeper, hopefully the money I earn will keep us off the streets. I have seen people who were evicted from their homes and are living in shacks in places called “Hoover Towns”, that scares me, to think what the future might hold for us. I hope this depression will end soon, my children are not used to me not being at home. Though I like the thought of me being able to find a job I’d rather stay at home with them, they are so young to be alone. Lost In the dark and in the cold They told me the world was mine to hold What started as fortune ended in debt How much worse can things get Homes are lost and families starve Similar to the start of the history we had begun to carve To prove the worth of our new nation For which we had sung in exaltation Now it seems will turn to ash All because of the market crash.
