STAGE I – DESIRED RESULTS
LESSON TOPIC:
BIG IDEAS:
M11.A.1.2 Apply number theory concepts to show
relationships between real numbers in problem solving settings.
M11.A.2.2 Use exponents, roots and/or absolute value to solve
problems.
M11.E.1.1 Appropriately display and/or use data in problemsolving settings.
M11.A.1.1Represent and/or use numbers in equivalent forms
(e.g., integers, fractions, decimals, percents, square roots,
exponents and scientific notation).
Properties of Real Numbers
Integers , fractions, decimals
A.SSE.1 Seeing Structure in Expressions
UNDERSTANDING GOALS (CONCEPTS):
Students will explore the basic operations with rational numbers.
They will use the number line both for calculation and graphing
purposes. They will also explore the square root of a number.
Stem leaf and line plots will be used in applications of rational
numbers and data. Probability and odds will also be discussed
and calculated.
VOCABULARY:
Absolute value, rational and irrational numbers, probability, odds,
line plot, stem leaf plot, measures of central tendency, integer,
square root, frequency, simple event, sample space, line plot,
radical sign
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
1. Where do you find rational numbers on the number line
? How many are there?
2. How can you use the number line to show data?
3. What does it mean to have a positive or negative
change?
4. How do you use multiplication and division of rational
numbers in everyday life?
5. How and why do you use probability in sports?
6. How can square roots be used?
STUDENT OBJECTIVES (COMPETENCIES/OUTCOMES):
Students will be able to:
1.
2.
3.
Classify and order real numbers, Graph rational numbers
on a number line, Find absolute value of rational
numbers
Adding and subtracting integers, decimals, fractions
Multiplying and dividing integers, decimals, fractions
