How do young people get convinced into joining a gang? What are the differences in cultures between kids that join gangs and kids that don't? Students will understand: Students will understand how to summarize information presented to them. Students will understand the culture that goes along with being a gang member. Students will be able to compare and contrast the different environments and cultures of young people likely to join a gang and those young people not likely to join a gang. SWBAT understand the characteristics of vulnerable young kids that are at risk of joining a gang. SWBAT compare and contrast the cultures of kids likely to join gangs and kids who are unlikely to join gangs. STAGE II – ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE PERFORMANCE TASK: Students will take notes on gang cultures. The goal of this lesson is to have a topic that interests the students enough to put good effort forth in developing summarizing skills and writing skills. K-W-L charts will be completed. Short readings and writings will be completed. Reflections on their neighborhoods or personal stories will be composed. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS: Pre-Assessment Summarizing Main Ideas Open Ended Questions STAGE III: LEARNING PLAN INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES: Do Now; Mini Lesson: Guided Practice: Independent Practice: Summations/Formative Assessments: Reflections: -A wrap up of Mexico and Canada will be completed. -North American map quiz and Neighbor facts will be completed. -Current events will be discussed throughout the week and when brought up by students. -Students will complete a KW-L chart on gang culture. -Students will create a writing sample on the differences and similarities of MATERIALS AND RESOURCES: Maps, Internet, gang movie, handouts, lecture and notes materials INTERVENTIONS: -1-on-1 instruction -small group -repetition -reminders to stay on task -extended time for activities when needed ASSIGNMENTS: Assignments not completed in class will be homework. at-risk youth and not at-risk youth of possible gang members. -Guided notes on gang characteristics. -Students will take notes on a documentary on the world's most dangerous gang. -Compare and contrast worksheet will be completed and analyzed with a group activity. -Reflections of their own neighborhoods and gang activities will be composed.
