Why do so many European countries have such unique cultures when they are close together? What are some of the unique cultures that each European country has? Students will understand: Students will understand the basic demographic information about Europe. Students will understand the basic ideas behind the governments of Europe. Students will understand the role that America plays in that area and the history of America and Europe. Students will understand the different cultures of this region and learn how a place so close together can be so different. SWBAT demonstrate their knowledge of the Europe by creating short writing samples about the countries. SWBAT explain what the European union is and how it came about. SWBAT analyze America's role with Europe and predict the future relationship with them. SWBAT understand new vocabulary and apply those words to different class activities. SWBAT understand how close neighbors have developed such different cultures over time. STAGE II – ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE PERFORMANCE TASK: Students will take notes on European countries. Graphic organizers will be used to categorize the facts about the different countries. The goal of this lesson is to have a topic that interests the students enough to put good effort forth in developing summarizing skills and writing skills. Class participation will also be assessed. A new word-wall list will be created. Short films on some European countries will be shown. MATERIALS AND RESOURCES: Maps, Internet, notes on Europe, class notebooks, handouts, lecture and notes materials, clips about European culture and America's business there. INTERVENTIONS: -1-on-1 instruction -small group -repetition -reminders to stay on task -extended time for activities when needed ASSIGNMENTS: Assignments not completed in class will be homework. -Short readings on historic European countries events will be read and summarized. -Research will be done on the current relationship between America and Europe. -Small writing samples will be completed to practice writing skills. -Passages from the text will be read and critical thinking activity will follow. -A blank map of the Europe will be distributed and students will create their own map separating Western, Eastern, Southern, and Central Europe. -World news websites will be researched to gain knowledge on foreign news.
