Directions: Read the Post Gazette article “Storytelling: Her Homewood was…” by Valerie
Penn-Eberhardt, Excerpts: Barack Obama Dreams from My Father, Harry Bernstein’s The
Invisible Wall, and Paule Marshall’s Brown Girl, Brownstones.
Think about the neighborhood where you grew up. Using four out of five senses, write
an expository essay that describes your neighborhood. Make sure your essay contains
the following:
-Introduction Paragraph
-Body Paragraphs
-Concluding Paragraphs
-4 out of 5 senses that are used in the description of the neighborhood
-Describe physical characteristics
-Mention geographical location
-Mention historical information
Senses: Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch, Hear
Expository Writing: Writing that conveys information and explains ideas.
Descriptive Writing: Writing that tries to get readers to see, feel, and hear what we
have seen, felt, and heard.
