Guide to Changing Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers
An improper fraction is a fraction whose numerator (top number) is larger
than its denominator (bottom number).
Example:

*To turn an improper fraction into a mixed number, divide the numerator
by the denominator. Write your new whole number big to the left, your
remainder will be your numerator, and the denominator will stay the same.

A mixed number is a fraction that is greater than 1 whole. A mixed number
will have a whole number followed by a fraction.

*To turn a mixed number into an improper fraction, multiply the
denominator by the whole number and add the numerator. Put the
answer on top of the original denominator.
