October is here and we are very excited to see all of our new and returning students in the library. We love seeing your children each week as they come to the library to hear stories, develop reading comprehension skills, explore information resources, and check-out great books. Please remind your child to return their books on their library day. Even if they forget their books that day, let your child know that they can bring their books back any day of the week and ask for a pass to the library from their classroom teacher to exchange, return, or check-out books. In September, we learned about book care, how the library is organized, how to use the online catalog, and how to locate books in the library. Fourth and fifth grade students began lessons on internet searching. We will be using the Common Sense Media curriculum to learn how to navigate the information in a technological society, be safe when we use a technology device, and how responsibly use the work and creations of others. This is part of Loudoun County Public School’s One to the World Initiative preparing our students to learn in an environment that helps them develop as critical thinkers. If you have a few minutes in your day, we are always looking for volunteers to help us shelve and assist with straightening the books in the library. Stop in and visit us, we are very happy to have your help. Finding a “Just Right Book” You have probably heard your student talking about a “just right book.” We are always working with our students to find books that will help become better readers. Parents often wonder just what is just right for my child. Your child should think of “I PICK” when assessing a book: Notes from the Counselor Counseling Groups Ms. Fore will be sending home interest forms for counseling groups. Please return the form if you are interested in a counseling group for your child. Hey, Wildcats! Backpack Buddy Program is Here! Please let Ms. Fore know if you are interested in taking home food for the weekend. Bags will be sent home with your oldest child each Friday. BIRTHDAYS We have received a generous donation to help our students celebrate their birthdays. If you would like for your child to participate, please contact Mrs. Fore at 571-434-4462 Music Notes The Sugarland Chorus is up and running! Our 4th and 5th grade students practice each Wednesday after school. The Chorus Concert will be held November 19th. Be on the lookout for more information. Auditions for Sugarland’s Got Talent will be held on October 6th. Family Science Night! We are excited about our first Family Science Night! We need volunteers to help run the stations. The event will be held on October 27th from 6-8 p.m. Be on the lookout for more information and a form to fill out. Refreshments will be served. PBIS Dear Parents, Sugarland is a PBIS school, which stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. We work together to create a safe and orderly school for everyone. Please remind your child to come to school each day being ready, respectful, and responsible. Please feel free to contact me throughout the school year with any questions, concerns or suggestions you may have. I can be reached at gail.brady@lcps.org Thank you! I hope you are all off to a great start this year!
