Course Import - Long fi le pat hs no longe r cause is sues on import | Updated
In some cases, Blackboard type course packages contained a course path that was too long to be correctly managed by D2L
Learning Environment. The base operating system of native Blackboard courseware is Linux, which allows a longer file path
structure, and had previously caused import errors on Blackboard packages.
This solution is functional with both self-hosted and hosted learning environment solutions.

No user impact
Support for long paths has been added so that
Blackboard course packages no longer cause
import errors. There have been improvements
to messaging and logging for the Blackboard
load process.
Users can now import
Blackboard course packages
as standard import code
paths, rather than special
case imports code paths.
This solution is an improvement to many
Blackboard packages with long paths;
however, some packages might still encounter
an error if the course path is too long.

Game -Based Learning se rv ice | Ne w
Incorporating game-based mechanics, visual design, and thinking into a course can help organizations improve learner
engagement, retention, and achievement. D2L Professional Services provides a comprehensive array of Game-Based
Learning (GBL) services, including game design, development, and integration for your courses in D2L Learning Environment.

Brightspace Platform 10.5.4
Features
The content publishing component is a drag and drop form-based system that allows instructors to create a custom lookand-feel to their game-based content, as well as create 6 unique activities. No coding is required and you can apply a GBL
module to as many courses in D2L Learning Environment as you want.
Figure 2: Creating a branching scenario activity in The Branching Scenario Wizard
The gamification framework is focused on scores, achievements, and unlocks. Learners attempt various activities on a single
map in an effort to unlock all of the available content. The system currently targets formative assessment and challenges
learners to demonstrate their knowledge, rather than perform a summative assessment. Each published map has an
associated grade item, with a learner goal of achieving 100% on the grade item. Instructors can track learner progress
through the map via the grade item. Instructors can also include rewards as learners progress, and learners can track
progress against their peers, introducing an element of competition.

Large impact to role permissions for
administrators and instructors.
In D2L Learning Environment, there is
a new webapp role (under Security in
the Roles and Permissions tool). This
role is created by D2L and is used by
the GBL system to retrieve data from
the course; administrators do not log
in with or use this role. The following
org-only permissions are turned on by
default:
D2L creates the webapp role during
deployment of the GBL service.

A user with the Administrator role is
responsible for creating additional
Administrator and Instructor roles in
the Admin tool.
To allow authentication, D2L must
enable the LTI integration with GBL.
Important: The webapp role and its
default permissions should not be
modified. Doing so may alter the GBL
experience.
Within the Admin tool, there are two
roles:

The Administrator role has full
privileges within the Admin tool,
and is able to create users, and
view all maps/activities created
by all Administrators and
Instructors.

The Instructor role is limited to
viewing their own maps/activities
and cannot create users.
GBL authenticates users using LTI
links to D2L Learning Environment.
Separate authentication credentials
are not required.

D2L Student Success System
D2 L St udent Succes s S yst e m - St ude nt s at R is k widget | New
This release of the D2L Student Success System introduces the following features:

a new Students at Risk widget

improvements to the student dashboard
To enhance monitoring of learner success, instructors can add a new Students at Risk widget to a course homepage in D2L
Learning Environment. Once a week, D2L Student Success System updates the widget to display up to 5 students that the
system determines are "at risk." The sub-title of the widget changes to reflect the predicted grades for the week.
By default, learner names display as Anonymous in the widget. This allows instructors to protect learner names in settings
shared with other learners, for example, in a classroom or during a web cast. To view learner information, the instructor
points to the widget or moves the input focus (for accessibility) to the anonymous name. Additionally, clicking the Show
names link toggles the photos and names of all learners listed in the widget.
Clicking a learner's name loads the dashboard page for that learner, displaying more detailed information about that
learner's predicted outcome.

Users with permission to delete course templates (org-level permission) can now successfully do so using the API.
To reproduce the fix:
1.
Create a new user, ensuring the role has both Create Course/Templates and Delete Course/Templates permission at the
org level (under the Manage Courses tool)
2.
Create a new course template using the following API: http://docs.valence.desire2learn.com/res/course.html#post--d2lapi-lp-(version)-coursetemplates-
3.
Attempt to delete the course template using the following API:

Previously, MIME types were not permanently added to client servers, causing them to be overwritten with new updates.
MIME types for the following extensions have been added to the default server template:

.srt



.mem


PR B0 0 50190
Occasionally, database blocking occurred when deleting quizzes with dependent release conditions, due to a conditions
cleanup call that occurred during the transaction.
Changes have now been made to the calls to ensure no database blocking occurs when there exist release conditions
depending on those quizzes.

Brightspace Platform 10.5.4
Fixed Issues
PR B0 0 50203
With Copy Course Components, copying competency activities that are assessed with rubrics sometimes resulted in query
timeouts that failed to copy the components from one course to another.
Performance improvements have been made to the process for copying competency activities, such as dropbox assignments,
that are assessed with rubrics.
(This issues is only reproducible if a single (multi-level, multi-criteria, text-only) rubric is copied to many org units in an
instance, resulting in a large number of corresponding entries in the RESOURCES table.)
Calendar
PR B0 0 42379
Previously, some students in a course were able to view, in Calendar, the end dates of content topics in Group-restricted
modules for groups they were not enrolled in.
Students can no longer see end date events in the Calendar tool for content items inside a module that is restricted to a
specific group, unless they are enrolled in that group.
To reproduce the fix:
1.
In a course with students organized into groups, in Content, create a module.
2.
Restrict the content module to users in one of the groups.
3.
Create a topic in the content module. Set Start and End dates for the topic.
4.
In Calendar, verify the dates appear.
5.
Impersonate a user from a different group.
6.
In Calendar, note the event dates are not visible.
Content
PR B0 0 47490
In some cases, the Tab key did not skip to main content in Internet Explorer or Chrome browsers.
Tabbing now works as expected in these browsers. In the Content Completion Summary area, logical tabbing order has been
fixed when searching for users, changing sort orders and preserving focus. Similarly, on the Activity Details, tabbing works as
expected.
To reproduce this fix:
1.
Using an Internet Explorer or Chrome browser, log in to D2L Learning Environment and select a course from your course
list.
© 2015 by D2L Corporation. All rights reserved.
13
Brightspace Platform 10.5.4
Fixed Issues
2.
Access the Content tool.
3.
Bring Keyboard focus on Completion Summary section (Press TAB key).
4.
Bring Keyboard focus on Name column > Press Enter to expand.
5.
Bring focus order to any sorting order option using tab key.
6.
Change the sorting order using Enter key.
7.
Notice tabbing works as expected.
PR B0 0 50002
Sometimes an error occurred when adding an LTI link to a content module using the API, or by adding a quicklink to the URL
field of a new link in D2L Learning Environment. This issue only occurred if the quicklink was used in the org unit that it was
created in.
Quicklinks now function and appear as expected in Content modules.
To reproduce the fix in D2L Learning Environment:
1.
Create an LTI Link through External Learning Tools.
2.
Add a file to a content module, and click Add Quicklink to add a link to that LTI Link.
3.
Copy the URL of that quicklink.
4.
Create a new link (a normal link, not an LTI link) in a content module, and paste the quicklink URL into the URL field.
5.
Note the link appears in the content module as expected. No error occurs when you click the link.
PR B0 0 50196
Previously, content topic quicklinks to other course objects (quizzes, discussions, etc.) imported into a course could take up
to 2 minutes before they were functional.
Content topic quicklinks to other course objects will now function immediately after import into a course.
To reproduce the fix:
1.
Create a new course, and import a course package that contains quicklink content topics that link to course objects such
as discussions.
2.
Once the import finishes, immediately click View Content and navigate to any module/submodule containing a quicklink
topic.
3.
Note the quicklink appears as expected and links to the correct course object.

Brightspace Platform 10.5.4
Fixed Issues
PR B0 0 50084
In some cases, when the device you used to access Brightspace had a different time zone than the time zone set in
Brightspace, there was an offset issue in some times in the system.
Dates in Brightspace now respect the setting in Brightspace, regardless of the setting on the device.
To reproduce this fix:
1.
Ensure that the time zone settings on Brightspace and the device you are using to access Brightspace are different.
2.
Observe that the time zone reflects the Brightspace settings.
PR B0 0 50085
In some cases, when the system uses contextual dates and times (such as "a few minutes ago", or "last week"), the date
format sometimes changed if the contextual dates and the actual date used different date formats.
The fuzzy date control now uses the device time zone from the device and does not change if the user has been on a page for
an extended period.
Discussions
PR B0 0 47792
In some cases, if a discussion topic was restricted to a group or section, and the instructor did not enroll themselves in that
group or section, they did not have access to the discussion topic in either Reading or Grid view.
Now, the instructor no longer receives an authorization error when viewing the restricted discussion topic in grid view.
To reproduce this fix:
1.
Ensure that d2l.Tools.Discuss.EnableGridView is enabled in the Config Variable Browser.
2.
Create or update a role so that the role properties are not set to Access all course sections.
3.
Ensure that the role has Discussion > See Grid View permission.
4.
Create a user in the role.
5.
Enroll the user into an org unit.
6.
In Edit Course > Groups, create a new group.
7.
In Discussions > New Forum, add a topic.
8.
On the Restrictions tab, check Restrict this topic to the following groups and sections but don't select any groups or
sections.
9.
Click Save.

12. Observe that you can see the topic with restrictions without any errors.
Email
PR B0 0 50171
In some cases, the Email All Users in a Group/Section option puts email address in the To field instead of the BCC field.
The action to email group members now respects the value of the d2l.tools.mail.emailselectedrecipientsinbcc config at the

Groups
PR B0 0 50143
Previously, a student could see their section listed among other groups with only the See Groups permission.
A user's ability to see their section information within the Groups tool is now controlled by the See Sections permission.
To reproduce the fix:
1.

Login Portal
PR B0 0 49438
In some cases, when users signed into D2L Learning Environment using a GUID SSO, they are sent to the /d2l/home rather
than their department home page.
Users are now logged into their department home page as expected.
To reproduce this fix:
1.
Set up Custom Login Logic.
2.
Perform GUID SSO with a user logged into the department you configured.
3.
Observe that you are redirected to the department homepage as expected.
Quizzes
PR B0 0 48975
Previously, instructors could delete questions in a quiz after quiz attempts had been made by students. Instructors could
then use the Update All Attempts > Give to all attempts - points function to update scores for all students. In recent
versions, the Questions that are not in the quiz anymore option did not appear as expected and associated question
statistics did not display.
The Questions that are not in the quiz anymore option now shows deleted questions as expected. Instructors can now
regrade questions that have been removed from the quiz and view the question statistics successfully.

Rubrics
PR B0 0 42292
In some cases, imported rubrics with custom levels did not retain their point value.
Now when you export a rubric with custom points, the points are now correctly exported with the zip file and are
successfully imported with the course package. This fix applies only to rubrics that are newly exported and imported; existing
exported course packages may still encounter the missing point value.
To reproduce this fix:
1.

2.
Edit the item values to change the defaults.
3.
Click Edit Course > Import/Export/Copy Components.
4.

REST Custom Platform
PR B0 0 49552
In some cases, orgs that no longer existed resulted in a large number of Data Export and Course Storage Quotas errors.
Data Export and Course Storage Quotas no longer log errors to the system log when they are not explicitly enabled. When
they are turned on, other messages are logged as expected.
