A significant shift of the Standards is the focus on how we use language to communicate in order to learn. Today we are going to focus on the Three Modes of Communication (highlighted in visual) around which the new Language Proficiency Descriptors and ELD Standards Part I: Interacting in Meaningful Ways are organized. We will engage in three activities: First activity will developing our understandings of the Language Proficiency Descriptors The second activity will focus on How we would provide scaffolded instruction for English learners at each proficiency level (Emerging, Expanding, and Bridging) as they interact via the three communicative modes (Collaborative, Interpretive, and Productive). Finally, we will bring closure to our learning by engaging in the walk the walls review and reflection 9:15 Activity One: Moises Video Show Moises video Task (Pairs) Overall impressions, respond holistically. What strengths did Moises bring? Introduce Language Proficiency Matrix Small groups : Focus on Modes of Communication (Collaborative, Interpretive, Productive). Assign 1/3 of participants to each mode Locate Moises relative to the mode. What proficiency level is he? How do you know? Share out small groups. What did the Collaborative group notice?
