BOZEMAN -- In celebration of Earth Day, MSU Extension, in conjunction with Governor Schweitzer, announce the recent

EcoStar award winners for their pollution prevention efforts.

The EcoStar awards program, now in its twelfth year, recognizes

Montana businesses and organizations that are helping create more environmentally and economically sustainable communities by surpassing state and federal requirements to reduce solid and hazardous waste generation. The award winners conserve valuable resources such as water, energy and clean air, and serve as role models for the state with their pollution prevention efforts.

Senators Tester and Baucus along with Governor Brian Schweitzer thank the recipients for their environmental efforts and the important role they hold in their communities. Schweitzer also acknowledged, “Sustainability gives businesses a competitive edge when it comes to operating business in ways that improve the community and connect with the consumer. The efforts required to be green can also save money and help the bottom line.”

The 21 award winners represent 16 communities across Montana and are a diverse group, representing everything from community gardens, to restaurants, ranchers, builders, schools, spas and more. For a complete list of winners by city see below.

"This year alone the 21 Ecostar award winners saved more than

6,042,717 gallons of water, conserved over 1,689,734,996 BTUs, reduced 1,147,775 lbs of hazardous waste, and saved $652,256 due to their pollution prevention efforts. This is a significant impact on the state of Montana and serves as an excellent model for other businesses. These Montanans are leading their communities and working to preserve and protect our environmental resources. It is important to recognize and thank them for their efforts and leadership." said Jenny

Grossenbacher, Pollution Prevention Coordinator for MSU

Extension.
