Approval of meeting minutes from May 18, 2007 Approved. Additions/Changes to Agenda None. IT Status Sheet Review/Discussion Computer Refresh Program – Andi Beach asked about the program. It is still being discussed in Cabinet and the budget is being worked out. Windows Vista/Office 2007 – Mike Spiess asked about these new systems. Andrea Mox said that USRV will soon be assessing what machines will be able to run Vista. A compatibility checker is currently being imaged onto lab machines for Office 2007. Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn’t provide a centralized method of pushing out this compatibility checker, so we aren’t currently able to send updates for Office 2007 to lab machines. In the near future, Vista, Office 2007, and Mac OS X Leopard are all going to create challenges for the campus. Confluence – Joe Alexander asked about faculty use of the Wiki. Jerry Ringel responded that he may be able to get into Phase 3 of the pilot program. Top 10 IT Issues (Bill Post) Bill shared the presentation he gave to Cabinet earlier this summer entitled Higher Education Top-Ten IT Issues 2007 from EDUCAUSE. The issues, in descending order, are: Funding IT; Security; Administrative/ERP/Info Systems; Identity/Access Management; Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity; Faculty Development; Infrastructure; Strategic Planning; Course/Learning Management Systems; and Governance, Organization, and Leadership for IT. Bill also shared the Web Governance presentation. He will distribute to UTAC and asked for feedback regarding the plan. Microsoft Office 2007/Windows Vista (Andrea Mox) Andrea reported on issues that the campus and User Services are facing with the release of Windows Vista and Office 2007 and shared timelines for implementation. Among several issues that need to be resolved, many applications (Blackboard Vista, for example) are not supported on MS Vista at this time and will cause problems in user support and training. Compatibility with previous versions of Office products will pose a significant challenge, as the document format has changed with the new version. It will not be feasible to have Vista on the next round of campus machines, but dual imaging of Office 2007 and 2003 for labs is on the horizon. Communication with faculty and staff, particularly about the .docx format (which many students are already using) is going to be important. Zip Files (Andrea Mox) Andrea reported that the recent implementation of two tools (Proofpoint and McAfee ePO) has given USRV the confidence to once again allow .zip files to be sent and received as attachments to Exchange email after years of being blocked. Zip files have traditionally been a good method for virus transportation; while Proofpoint is able to scan 21 layers deep, it does not eliminate the need to exercise caution when opening email attachments. 7.
