Robert Noyce SMART Affiliate Program Application Information The CWU Robert Noyce SMART (Science and Mathematics Alliance for the Retention of Teachers) Affiliate Program seeks to encourage talented science and mathematics majors to become K-12 science and mathematics teachers, especially those from underrepresented groups. SMART Affiliates participate in paid teaching internships during their first or second year of college or in the summer. Minimum Eligibility Criteria: Full time first and second year CWU and partner community college students with: a declared or intended major in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, General Science, Mathematics, Middle Level Mathematics and Science, or Physics an interest in exploring a career teaching middle or high school a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in major courses U.S. citizenship or who are U.S. national or permanent resident SMART Affiliate Program requirements Complete an 80 hour or a 160 hour teaching internship Application Instructions: 1) Submit FAFSA to Financial Aid Office 2) Complete the Noyce SMART Affiliate Program Application Form. 3) Arrange for three confidential Noyce SMART Affiliate Recommendation Forms to be forwarded to the Noyce SMART Affiliate Program Selection Committee by three college professors (or two college professors and one K-12 teacher) who can speak to your academic merit and interest in teaching science or mathematics 4) Type an essay (up to 750 words maximum) that addresses the following: Why teaching science or mathematics at the middle or high school level interests you; Your personal and professional qualifications; How a SMART Affiliate teaching internship would contribute to your professional development. As the National Science Foundation and Central Washington University would like to provide SMART Affiliate internships to a diverse group of students, you may also address any socioeconomic difficulties, disability, or other challenges you currently face or have overcome.
