Master of Science, Family and Consumer Sciences Department (Annual Program Assessment 2010 – 11) Proposed Program Assessment 2011-12 and beyond There are two specializations of the MS Family and Consumer Sciences: Family Studies specialization; and the Family and Consumer Sciences, Career and Technical Education specialization. In this graduate program, it is expected that 80% of the students completing courses will be judged as satisfactory for each outcome. This is a realistic level as with the non-traditional student group, there are instances of students encountering circumstances that leave them unable to complete. In 2010 – 11, outcomes were not assessed in the MS – FCS, so this is However, using the plan outlined in this document, standards of assessment are being noted for two of the outcomes applicable to each specialization during 2011-12 and will be reported in December 2012. Graduate students will be able to utilize the scientific process in generating new knowledge. 1 I Graduate students will be able to conceptualize and design a relevant research project to answer a specific research question. Majors will be required to design and complete a research project which answers a research question of their own. Related courses: FCSG 501 Research Methods; FCSG 700 Thesis or Project or Exam; FS 522 Survey of Research. Graduate students will be able to apply the scientific process in evaluating current knowledge. 1 I Graduate students will be able to critically evaluate contemporary empirical literature. Students will be required to complete a critical examination of contemporary research. Related coursework: FCSG 501; FS 522. Reporting by June of 2012 for inclusion at December 2012 annual assessment. “ Graduate students will be able to analyze quantitative data, review, understand, and interpret output from statistical analyses, drawing appropriate conclusions. Graduate students enter, analyze, and interpret quantitative data for relevant findings in order to prepare a research paper examining a specific research question. Graduates of the Family Studies specialization will develop skills in critical and abstract thinking, and application of theory to real life circumstances. 1,4 I, IV Family Studies graduate students will demonstrate abstract and critical thinking skills in applying Family Systems concepts to family problems and interventions. Family Studies graduate students will be required to submit a research paper demonstrating critical integration of theory, research, and practice. FS 532 Family Interaction. Graduates of the Family Studies specialization will be able to effectively manage conflict in professional and interpersonal relationships. 1,4 IV Family Studies graduate students will learn to identify and negotiate solutions in conflict situations and demonstrate the ability to devise individual and group strategies that minimize the destructive consequences of conflict. Family Studies graduate students will be complete a critical examination of various conflict situations. They must present a report of how to handle each conflict situation in an assigned paper. Students must apply various techniques and methods discussed throughout the term in order to provide satisfactorily solutions to all parties involved. FS 542. Graduates of the Family Studies specialization will be able to apply their knowledge base and skill in appropriate professional settings. 1 I Family Studies graduate students will demonstrate positive communication and professional efficacy in working in Human Service settings. Family Studies graduate students will be evaluated on their performance and professional behavior in internship and community service opportunities. Graduates of the Family Studies specialization will be able to make effective professional presentations. 1 Outcomes I – VI I Family Studies graduate students will demonstrate proficiency at presenting findings in both visual and oral formats. Methods of Assessment per specific courses Family Studies graduate students will be required to present the findings of their final research project as both a poster and an oral presentation. Career and Technical Education Specialization 4b. Graduates of the Career and Technical Education specialization will be able to develop CTE programs and course curricula that meet learning outcomes and standards as required by the OSPI. 1,4 I, IV CTE graduate students will demonstrate principles of program and curriculum development for effective student learning and assessment as they apply to the standards set by the OSPI. They will also develop and maintain effective industry partnerships through advisory committees and workbased learning curricula. CTE graduate students will be evaluated on their design and implementation plans for CTE programs and course curricula, including a school-to-work focus. CTE 521, CTE 551, FCSG 583. Course assessment will occur at regular intervals throughout the calendar year. Initial assessment occurs following courses that begin during the summer session and concludes no later than June of the following year, when all course requirements will be fulfilled. Students will earn minimum scores of 80% for course requirements. They will incorporate this knowledge within the development and application of curricular programs and courses. CTE graduate students will be evaluated on their knowledge and application of CTE history, philosophy, and current trends and issues as they apply to secondary CTE programs. CTE 551, CTE 526. Reporting by June of 2012 for inclusion at December 2012 annual assessment. Students will earn minimum scores of 80% for course requirements. 6b. Graduates of the Career and Technical Education specialization will be able to apply their knowledge base and skills sets as leaders in the education profession. 1 I CTE graduate students will engage and apply their leadership skills and expertise as they affect their educational institutions. CTE graduate students will be evaluated on the quality of their contributions to their schools, administration, professional organizations, community, and local industry through service and/or cooperative learning activities.
