“Speed Meeting” Questions English 101 / Carter / Fall 2011 Overview: The “get-to-know” exercise is a common activity at the beginning of the semester in many college classes. In ENG 101, we’ll elevate things by not only getting to know names but also some substantial information about your writing experiences. Before class on Tuesday, August 30, think about, type, and print two copies of your responses to the prompts below. In class, you’ll participate in “Speed Meeting 101,” where you’ll meet many other students in class by pairing up and discussing your responses. Directions: For ONE of the prompts below, write an extended response of at least one single-spaced page. Write at least one good paragraph for each of the other prompts. While your responses can be informal (using contractions, “I,” and a more personal style), you should also use specific details and develop your thoughts clearly and fully. Your goal in these responses is to provide as much information as possible, so while you should proofread for obvious typos and unclear sentences, focus on generating ideas as you write. Bring two copies of your stapled responses to class on Tuesday. Speed Meeting 101 Prompts: 1. What was your best writing experience? And/or: What was your worst writing experience? (The experience doesn’t necessarily have to be school-related.) 2. Discuss a time that you worked hard on an important writing project but received a low grade. And/or: Discuss a time that you didn’t work hard on an important writing project but received a high grade. 3. What is the most useful feedback that you’ve ever received on your writing? And/or: What is the least feedback that you’ve ever received on your writing? 4. What is the best thing that you’ve ever written (for a class or not)? 5. How do you usually go about writing an important paper? 6. What makes a good writing assignment? What are some good and/or bad writing assignments you’ve been given? What made them good or bad?
