TODAY’S OBJECTIVES:
Students will examine how the author’s purpose affects
his/her use of language and choice of form.
AGENDA:
1. Read chapter entitled “Ambush” from The Things
They Carried (pp.111-114) and answer close reading
questions 1-4, AND short response.
2. Watch Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam
and as a class, compare/contrast this documentary
with Fallen Angels, in the following areas: 1)
feelings about the war, 3) bonds between soldiers,
and 4) any insanity that war creates. Does this
documentary make Fallen Angels seem any more
realistic, even though the book is fiction?
3. Watch PBS Documentary Bloods in ‘Nam. What rhetorical
devices (ethos, pathos, logos) does the director use to
make his story compelling?
4. Continue Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers.
