Computers and Equipment All Tulane University employees and students have IBM-compatible Pentium microcomputers connected to the Tulane University Computing System or similar university operating systems, as well as access to printers, scanners, and any required supplies for the generation of project materials. The Tulane University SPHTM’s physical network comprises over 500 seats that serve seven academic departments and three administrative units. The local area network (LAN) is connected via a modern fiber optic backbone to a series of fast Ethernet (100Base-T) switches that interconnect each departmental unit. The LAN has full duplex fast Ethernet (200 mps) connectivity to the campus wide area network (WAN). All Tulane schools and colleges, administrative units, academic departments, and research centers have full secure access wherever necessary via the Tulane network fiber optic and backbone. Wireless nodes to support 802.1 lb. are available. All network access and secure connectivity is supported and maintained by Technology Services (TS). Tulane University is a part of the Abilene Network and has been an Internet-II connector since January 19, 2000. The SPHTM LAN is a TCP/IP based network that utilizes Windows 2000, XP Active Directory, Windows NT4 Domains, and departmental workgroups as network designs. Microsoft networking is the preferred system used and is fully supported by the Academic Information Services (AIS) Department. SPHTM departmental administrative units, research groups, projects, and student laboratories have complete access to LAN and/or WAN resources as needed. Most resources are readily available under local or wide area access to the web (http) protocols. In addition, project investigators also have networked UNIX and Linux based computing systems. The SPHTM provides three state-of-the-art PC laboratories for academic student use and teaching. Classrooms are equipped with one-touch, AMX-controlled electronic podiums that offer access to high performance (media-ready) PCs, Document Cameras, VCRs, DVDs, wireless remotes, and fast Ethernet Access. Computer software includes a comprehensive suite of academically licensed software fully supported by the AIS Department, including MS Office, SAS, SPSS, STATA, and Arcview GIS (8.2). Communications software includes Blackboard and Breeze.
