The next meeting will be held Tuesday, May 18. Please respond to items from your area by
Friday, May 14.
The meeting began at 9:05 a.m.
I.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Facility Services Issues. Sick Leave Use. The union complained about a
custodial employee who recently requested to take a full day of sick leave for
multiple doctors’ appointments and was told she could not use more than four
hours of sick for those purposes in a day. The union felt that it was
unreasonable to refuse this request, and unreasonable for the employee to have
to give detailed medical information to justify it. Director of Facility Services
Dave Danielson will investigate why this rejection occurred.
B. Computer Security. The union refreshed its request for a UITS technology
security officer to attend and address this group.
C. Local 82 Elections. Local 82 officers will take office as of May 13, and the
union will provide the employer with a list of new and current officers at that
time. The union thanked Facility Services for supporting the voting employees
in the recent election.

3. Hazardous Waste Training. Colleen Murphy, Associate Director of
University Safety and Assurances (US&A) noted that the Hazardous Waste
refresher training for custodians had been completed.
4. Smoking Ban. The union again asked for the campus’ plans with the
implementation of the state-wide smoking ban scheduled for this summer,
but the plan seems to have lost traction.
5. Tornado Drill. A campus-wide tornado drill is scheduled for 4/22. The
S.A.F.E. Alert system will be tested at the same time.
B.
Facility Services Issues. Supervisor Complaint. Following up on an item
from last month, a staff meeting was held with the Custodial Services
Supervisor that had been presented with a written statement signed by nine
custodians. The meeting discussed the issues of individual employees who
felt that the supervisor was not helping out enough.
Lamp Replacement. Following up on an item from last month, Mr.
Danielson noted that the campus actually has an adequate reserve supply of
lamps. The Stores operation should supply the lampers with inventory
sheets, so they will know what we have and what needs to be ordered.
C.
WATER Institute. Director Danielson met with the managers of the
WATER Institute to find out what could be done to improve the working
climate for the custodians assigned there. He ascertained that the custodians
may not have been cleaning the areas of most crucial concern to the
WATER staff. The Assistant Director of WATER holds regular all-staff
meetings which the custodians should attend, and the managers of Buildings
& Grounds will meet regularly with the Assistant Director to stay alert to
their needs. Mr. Danielson also stated that the facility needs to find another
break area for the custodians. The union thanked him for his support of the
custodians assigned to WATER.
The meeting ended at 9:50 a.m.
