Summer 2012 Science, Technology, and Engineering Program Guide
ADVANCED MATHEMATICS PROGRAM
In a day program for students talented in mathematical science, you will explore new concepts and
challenge yourself with new applications. Sessions include combinatorics, basic probability, algebra,
geometry, and more. This is a day program offered between 9am-4pm.
Application Deadline: Application AND letter of recommendation from the student’s math teacher are
due by May 30.* Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Early application is encouraged.
Program dates: July 16–20, 2012 (9AM to 4PM daily)

CAMP REACH
A recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in STEM Mentoring, Camp Reach a residential
program, brings together a group of inquisitive girls the summer before their seventh-grade year,
empowering them with two weeks of discovery and hands-on engineering to change the way the
world works. Emphasizing the social context of engineering design—the girls work in teams with a
community “customer” to create a plan for solving a real problem—Camp Reach keeps the
connection with these girls by offering follow-up activities through high school.

CRIME SCENE SCIENCE
Learn the science behind crime scene investigations. Process evidence from the crime scenes,
interview witnesses/suspects, use software to create composite pictures, learn to lift fingerprints,
examine trace evidence under the microscope and more. Participants will be assigned one of the
three ‘crimes’ to ‘process.’ The group will learn the techniques together and use them to process
evidence from their own ‘crime scenes.’ This is a day program offered between 9am-4pm.

INTELLECT QUEST
A Summer Program for kids who need an Intellectual Challenge!
Intellect Quest is a fun and challenging program designed to stimulate the inquisitive minds of
bright, motivated students. Designed for students (grades 5-8) throughout the area, this experience
requires cooperation, organization, and innovation.
Under the supervision or our summer director and alongside Mass Academy students, participants
work in a hands-on environment within the disciplines of math, science, and technology.
Division 1: July 9 - 13, 2012 Must be entering 7 or 8 grade as of September 2012
Division 2: July 16 - 20, 2012 Must be entering 5 or 6 grade as of September 2012
Audience: Elementary and Middle school students

COMPUTER QUEST
Computer Quest is a great camp for students to learn programming, publish your own web page, and

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY FOR YOUNG WOMEN
What do windshield wipers, Kevlar®, and fire escapes have in common? They were all invented by
women! At this weeklong residential program, participants build creativity and confidence. You will
learn leadership, presentations skills, and project management while working in teams in a variety of
themed days. And you’ll meet leading women executives during the program. The curriculum has
been designed to provide a unique, hands-on learning experience and is taught by WPI faculty and
students.

ROBOTICS: ADVANCED ROBOTICS
Already know the basics and ready for a challenge? Use your knowledge of the LEGO®
MINDSTORMS® platform to take it to the next level. At this week-long residential program, you
will work with WPI faculty and robotics students exploring the next level of robotic construction,
programming and competition.

ROBOTICS: JUNIOR ROBOTICS CHALLENGE
This weeklong day program designed to inspire and excite its participants as they explore science
and engineering in a fun and inventive atmosphere. It teaches the basics of designing, building and
programming autonomous robots using the LEGO® MINDSTORMS™ platform. The student-designed
robots then face-off in a friendly competition on the final day to demonstrate what was learned
during the week. This is a day program offered between 9am-4pm.

WOMEN IN SCIENCE
Ever wonder where science can take you? Science is the foundation of so many fields from Veterinary
medicine, to chemistry to national intelligence. This week long program is designed for girls entering
grades 5-7 and will provide a survey of many applications of science. Each day there will be 4 science
based workshops, teambuilding activities and games. Girls will be placed in groups of 10 and rotate
throughout the workshops each day. Teambuilding activities will include the entire group. This is a
day program offered between 9am-4pm.

ADVENTURES IN VETERINARY MEDICINE (AVM)
What does it take to be a veterinarian? Come to Adventures in
Veterinary Medicine and discover if this exciting career is right for you.

Qualifying Students: Students who have entered 7th or 8th grade as of September 2011. High school,
college, and adult sessions also available.

YouthNet provides neighborhood-based recreational, educational, and cultural activities to isolated
and underserved Worcester middle school aged youth. Transportation to and from the program is
provided.

SUMMER DISCOVERY DAY CAMP
Fill your summer with science and nature investigations. Explorations
and adventures are on the agenda at the EcoTarium's popular Summer
Discovery Camp for children ages 5-14, one of the longest-running summer
day camps in the United States. There are 3 different topics for this year’s
camps: Amazing Animals (July 16-27), How Things Work (July 2-6, August 6-10), and EcoTarium
Adventure (July 9-13, July 30-August 3)
July 2 to August 10

Cost: ($299 per week) and there is a $20 per week discount for those who register before May 1
($279 per week). One of the camps is a 2 week camp; the others are 1 week. Kids may be registered
for 1, 2 or all 3 camps.

JUNIOR STEWARD PROGRAM (Ages 12-17)
A leadership opportunity for teens interested in gardening, the outdoors, and working as a mentor
with children.
 Ages 14-17 work with Classes A and B; ages 12-13 work with Class A only
 Plant, care for and harvest their own vegetables and flowers
 Cook, prepare (and eat!) their crops
 Learn how plants grow, from seed to seed
 Explore the gardens and woods of Tower Hill Botanic Garden
 Participate in Tower Hill’s annual Summer Flower and Vegetable show and annual fall
event, "Shades of Autumn" (optional)
