Dr. Dudley-Eshbach (SU President) is representing the University System of Maryland Customer Service Administration is working hard to perform good customer service, primarily among our staff personnel, for students and their families Administrator Evaluations Administration is taking administrator evaluations very seriously; we want transparency and a strong university community Operating and Capital Budgets Operating and Capital Budgets are separate and not fungible; money earmarked for capital projects cannot be diverted to address needs in the operating area (e.g., faculty salaries, scholarships, etc.) Governor’s Budget Proposal Governor’s budget is looking good for higher education 2.5% merit pay increase is being earmarked; Across-the-board cost of living adjustment (COLA) may also be included 3 Possible increases for merit and COLA were discussed Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES) Down in Fall ‘15 Our FTES were down in the Fall by 100 This is not good; we need modest enrollment growth in order to be able to fight for money in the USM Nearly every USM institution saw a dip in freshman enrollments This one time dip is not currently a problem; however, it becomes a trend, then it would be problematic Diversity on Campus I invited minority student organizations to meet with me; still waiting to hear back from them One point they brought up during our initial brief meeting was that a discussion of diversity on campus should be campus and community wide Other topics General Education Review, the success of our Honors Program, campus space issues, changing our school budget processes to make them more transparent Closing Remarks from the Faculty Senate President Mount St. Mary’s University (Maryland) controversy Mount St. Mary’s University – a private institution in Emmitsburg, Maryland, not affiliated with USM – recently fired tenured faculty and others for ‘disloyalty’ after personnel voiced opposition to the university president’s remarks during a campus meeting More information is available at https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2016/02/09/mountst-marys-president-fires-two-faculty-members-one-tenure Faculty Senate may want to draft a letter of support for the fired personnel; but let’s read up on it first (see link above) Adjourned 4:25PM 4
