FACILITIES SERVICES Job Description Facilities Maintenance & Construction Roofer Job Code: 8862 – Contract Classified Department Introduction: Facilities Maintenance and Facilities Construction are responsible for general maintenance, repair, alterations, and renovations of all campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds. Job Purpose: Perform skilled installation, maintenance, and repair of all types of roofing. Duties and Responsibilities: Check roof areas, roof drains and gutters to determine serviceability and repair needs; clean debris as required; locate and repair roof and related leaks Prepare subroofing by removing old surfaces and repairing base for new material Install flashings for vent pipes, conduits, fans, air-conditioners and other machines or structures installed on roofs Inspect application of new roofs by contractors Read and interpret blue prints and/or working drawings Install or repair all types of roofing, including asphalt, composition, slate, tile and single-ply systems Operate a variety of power and hand tools including power hoists Estimate materials and time required for completion of jobs and projects Operate motorized vehicles, such as automobiles and trucks Maintain power and hand tools as required Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status/work progress, and needed materials and equipment Communicate and coordinate with other Facilities Services’ shops and Engineering Services to facilitate work Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, and the use of personal protective equipment whenever required Follow all University and Facilities Services’ policies and procedures Interact with clients, coworkers, management, staff and students in a courteous and professional manner, with particular attention to excellent customer service Attend all required meetings and trainings May instruct semiskilled workers Perform other duties as assigned Regular and predictable attendance is required Core Competencies: Demonstrate personal integrity and trustworthiness Manage stressful situations and changing priorities effectively Anticipate, recognize and resolve problems Be responsible and accountable Use organizational skills and provide attention to details Maintain a positive, optimistic and success-oriented attitude Exercise professional demeanor, which includes being tactful and courteous Exhibit a professional work ethic Continuously promote a safe work environment Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a roofer OR full journey status as a roofer in a union; OR four years' applicable work experience Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required 04/29/14 Page 1 of 2 Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge: Demonstrated ability to take direction, work well with others and as a member of a team, and in providing excellent customer services Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations Experience as a commercial and/or industrial roofer Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Aerial Bucket Truck Operator Certificate Conditions of Employment: Valid driver’s license recognized by the state of Washington May be required to accept variable work shift Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job Ability to lift and move heavy material is required Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions Must be able to work outside under all weather conditions A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire 04/29/14 Page 2 of 2
