Facilities Maintenance & Construction
Floorlayer
Job Code: 8838 – Contract Classified
Department Introduction:
Facilities Maintenance and Facilities Construction are responsible for general maintenance, repair, alterations, and
renovations of all campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds.
Job Purpose:
Perform journey-level work in applying a variety of decorative and functional coverings to floors, walls and other surfaces.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Scrape, chip and clean surfaces to prepare for installation of covering
 Apply adhesives, pastes and grouts
 Remove and install tile, linoleum, specialty vinyl and rubber cover base
 Install all types of carpet; measure and cut padding and carpet to size; sew trim and tack in place
 May develop cost estimates for installation and repairs
 Operate power carpet stretcher, electric hammer and drill, use chisel, knife, carpet shears, needle and thread
 Inspect surfaces for damages, estimate time and materials for repair
 Drive service vehicle; load and unload materials
 Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status/work progress, and needed materials and equipment
 Communicate and coordinate with other Facilities Services’ shops and Engineering Services to facilitate work
 Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the
job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, and the use of personal protective equipment
whenever required
 Follow all University and Facilities Services’ policies and procedures
 Interact with clients, coworkers, management, staff and students in a courteous and professional manner, with
particular attention to excellent customer service
 Attend all required meetings and trainings
 May perform work in other trades
 May instruct semiskilled workers
 Perform other duties as assigned
 Regular and predictable attendance is required

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a floorlayer or carpetlayer; OR full journey status as a floorlayer or
carpetlayer in a union; OR four years' applicable work experience
 Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for- year basis
 Possession of a valid WA State motor vehicle operator's license is required
 Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
 Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required

Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Demonstrated ability to take direction, work well with others and as a member of a team, and in providing
excellent customer services
 Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
 Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA
(Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations
Conditions of Employment:
 Valid WA State driver’s license
 May be required to accept variable work shift
 Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment
 Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job
 Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job
 Ability to lift and move heavy material is required
 A tuberculosis (TB) test is required for work assignments in non-human primate areas and in the Medical Center
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
