Campus Engineering & Operations
Plumber/Pipe/Steamfitter

Department Introduction:
Campus Engineering provides professional engineering support for the design, construction, operation and maintenance
of all University facilities. Campus Operations maintains and operates critical building systems including fire/life safety
systems, elevator systems, building environmental systems and controls, central clock systems, high voltage distribution
systems, and a utility shutdown coordination program. Campus Operations also provides emergency maintenance
response service to the Seattle campus community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campus Utilities produces steam,
emergency electrical power, chilled water, and compressed air for the campus.
Job Purpose:
Perform journey-level pipefitting/steamfitting in support of the operation, maintenance, repair and alteration of the steam
utility distribution systems and other piping systems at the University of Washington Seattle Campus.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Maintain and repair piping, tanks, and pressure vessels for steam, chilled water, hot water heating, condensate
and compressed air systems
 Maintain and make minor repairs to building fire sprinkler systems, winterize systems as required
 Assist in the annual testing of the dry sprinkler systems and assist contractors with fire sprinkler shutdowns
 Research and coordinate technical issues related to requests for shutdowns of campus steam distribution
systems, building heating systems, and other systems to avoid or minimize disruptions of service to the campus
 Use safe work practices within the shop, review jobs as necessary to identify potential work hazards and
requirements for proper personal protective equipment, comply with the MSDS program
 Use safe work practices around and be knowledgeable of asbestos containing materials
 Order shop and project parts and supplies as required
 Interact with clients, coworkers, management, and students in a professional manner and provide excellent
customer service
 Troubleshoot complex operational problems related to steam distribution and heating systems, develop and
implement solutions to these problems
 Assist construction contractors with connection of new buildings and renovated buildings to the campus piping
distribution systems
 Monitor operational issues related to the campus utility distribution tunnel system, identify problems and repair as
required
 Cut, fit, assemble, and weld a variety of pipe and piping systems, including large diameter pipe; and work with a
variety of piping and heating system components
 Read and interpret drawings, plans, and specifications
 Ensure compliance with construction codes and requirements
 Attend meetings and training sessions as required
 Maintain vehicle and tools as required
 Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a plumber/pipefitter/steamfitter, OR full journey status as a
plumber/pipefitter/steamfitter in a union, OR four years' applicable work experience
 Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis
 Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required
 Must be a strong team player not only able to work alone but able to work closely with other trades on a highly
complex utility distribution system
 Seattle Fire Department AS-1 Fire Sprinkler license
 Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
 Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
 Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Demonstrated ability to organize and plan your work taking into account the operational needs of the facility and
the other trades
 Ability to effectively communicate between the skilled trades and management to ensure effective operations
 Five or more years of experience as a pipe fitter/steamfitter/welder working on complex and critical piping
distribution systems, including and understanding on how to work safely on steam systems
Conditions of Employment:
 Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job
 Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment
 Must have Driver’s License valid in the State of Washington
 May be required to wear respiratory protection
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
