Campus Engineering & Operations
Elevator Mechanic Lead
Job Code: 8837 – Contract Classified
Department Introduction:
Campus Engineering provides professional engineering support for the design, construction, operation and maintenance
of all University facilities. Campus Operations maintains and operates critical building systems including fire/life safety
systems, elevator systems, building environmental systems and controls, central clock systems, high voltage distribution
systems, and a utility shutdown coordination program. Campus Operations also provides emergency maintenance
response service to the Seattle campus community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campus Utilities produces steam,
emergency electrical power, chilled water, and compressed air for the campus.
Job Purpose:
Provide leadership, plan, schedule, and direct the work of journey level elevator mechanics; perform skilled work on
vertical transportation equipment: elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, hoists, moving walks, and etc.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Assign and lead assigned personnel in the performance of work
 Develop preliminary cost estimates for installations and repairs
 Perform alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, facilities, and equipment
 Work as a team partner with the elevator mechanics on a daily basis in a professional manner at all times to
resolve conveyance system issues and associated equipment
 Identify and implement daily operation strategies for campus conveyance systems to ensure continuous and
reliable service
 Respond to emergency situations such as conveyance outages in order to minimize or prevent loss of property,
damage to research activities, and disruption to life-safety systems
 Develop work plans, methods, and procedures to be followed by elevator mechanics and assigned personnel
 Dispatch elevator mechanics and perform duties and necessary job tasks of an elevator mechanic as defined in
the WAC 296-96 Chapter of the elevator mechanic safety rules
 Perform the work in accordance with applicable safety rules and environmental regulatory requirements and
maintain records as required according to environmental requirements
 Inspect projects to ensure compliance with local standards and codes and maintain records of work performed
 Attend contractor meetings for the purpose of coordination of contract work which affects conveying systems
 This involves scheduling of system shutdowns, specifications, and safety plan reviews
 Coordinate conveyance equipment shutdowns and inconveniences with clients, construction coordinators, and
contractors communicating by telephone, e-mail, and on site conferences
 Lead and work with elevator mechanics to troubleshoot and repair elevator system failures relating to all aspects
of the conveyance equipment and systems
 Direct the cleaning of hydraulic or machinery oil spills, and maintain the containment of spills in accordance with
applicable safety rules and procedures
 Direct the work on asbestos-containing equipment in accordance with applicable safety rules and procedures
 Direct the work on the maintenance of conveyance systems
 Maintain a preventive maintenance program on conveyance equipment, components, and systems
 Maintain and update conveyance system schematics through red line system changes
 Review and assign work requests, and initiate, retrieve, and close work orders
 Field phone calls and e-mails to answer requests, questions, etc., of clients, and others
 Monitor equipment and supply needs, coordinate with supervisor, and requisition parts and materials to ensure
that employees have what they require to perform job duties and for service and repair of equipment
 Work with Facilities Services Stores to determine inventory
 Know and ensure that assigned personnel comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to
work actions and conduct on the job, including the use of personal protective equipment whenever required;
report safety infractions to the supervisor

Interact with clients, coworkers, management, staff, and students in a courteous and professional manner, with
particular attention to customer service
Follow and enforce adherence to all University and Facilities Services policies and procedures
Drive service vehicle as needed
Attend all required meetings and training
May direct or perform work in other trades
This position is subject to callback outside normal working hours to respond to emergencies, and routine
scheduled overtime
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 One-year, full-time experience as a journey elevator mechanic, or equivalent trade skill
 Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license recognized by the State of Washington
 Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal
requirements, such as a license/certification/registration
 Required to possess and maintain a valid class 01 or class 08 Elevator Mechanic License per WAC 296-9600910
 Experience and knowledge working with Washington State safety rules and regulations, WAC 296-Chapter 96
elevator mechanics safety rules, and OSHA requirements
 Excellent written and oral communication skills
 Strong customer service skills and experience communicating effectively with clients, students, staff, crew,
contractors and personnel
 Demonstrated successful experience in applicable basic desktop computer skills, maintenance work request and
work order programs
 Must be a team leader and be able to work both independently and as a team member
 Possess excellent skills in building a working crew harmony
 Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
 Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
 Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Six or more years of experience as an elevator service mechanic with a wide variety of elevators and in the repair,
service, maintenance, and operations of conveyance equipment, components, systems and etc.
 Education credits in the applicable license category (WAC 296-96-000910)
 Have a certificate of completion of an elevator mechanic’s apprenticeship program
 Have experience working independently as an elevator service mechanic for a licensed elevator contractor or as
an employee of a public agency
Conditions of Employment:
 Must attend an approved Labor & Industries elevator continuing education course and receive a certificate of
completion for the course
 The course must consist of not less than eight hours

This course must be attended and completed within one year immediately preceding any Elevator Mechanic
license renewal
Must be able to work in a diverse workforce
Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment
Must be able to communicate effectively on portable hand-held radios
Must have a good driving record
Must be able to lift or carry heavy objects, work in confined spaces, restricted movement areas,
mechanical/electrical spaces, elevator machine rooms, pits and shafts, etc. for extended periods of time and be
able to climb ladders and work at heights
Must maintain a professional appearance at all times
The position requires working with asbestos containing equipment, following proper procedures
This position requires the wearing of personal protective equipment appropriate to the job task
Must be able to work in animal research areas using the appropriate personal protective equipment
Approved safety shoes must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job
Must be able to respond to system emergencies during regular business hours and outside of regular business
hours
A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
