FACILITIES SERVICES Job Description Campus Engineering & Operations Electrician High Voltage Job Code: 8830 – Contract Classified Department Introduction: Campus Engineering provides professional engineering support for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of all University facilities. Campus Operations maintains and operates critical building systems including fire/life safety systems, elevator systems, building environmental systems and controls, central clock systems, high voltage distribution systems, and a utility shutdown coordination program. Campus Operations also provides emergency maintenance response service to the Seattle campus community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campus Utilities produces steam, emergency electrical power, chilled water, and compressed air for the campus. Job Purpose: Installing, modifying, troubleshooting, repairing, testing, maintaining and operating high voltage 13.8 KV Substations. Duties and Responsibilities: Perform duties of a Power Dispatcher, (clearances and record keeping) as defined in WAC 296-Chapter 45 Perform high voltage clearances on previously energized electrical equipment Test electrical equipment and ground for work clearance Perform clearances for contractors and shop personnel to work on previously energized high voltage electrical equipment Inspect contractor’s work to see that work is performed to campus specifications Maintain cleanliness of all electrical distribution equipment and vaults Operate high voltage switches (SF6, air, and oil type switches) Troubleshoot electrical failures relating to power cables, substation relays, transformers, secondary breakers, and other equipment Repair failures of substation breakers, transformers, and other equipment Repair failures of power cables, pull cable, install terminations, test, and restore equipment Inspect and maintain records of PCB contaminated electrical equipment Clean PCB spills, and maintain containment of PCB spills Work on asbestos containing electrical equipment as a Class II Asbestos Worker Work on the maintenance of generation systems Test various emergency generator systems and automatic transfer switches Work on the maintenance and operation of motor starters and controls Conduct preventative maintenance program on transformers, switchgear and other electrical equipment Connect emergency generators during power failures, scheduled or unscheduled Operate a variety of hand and power tools Direct the duties of helpers, and non electrical workers that need to work in the area of high voltage equipment Maintain and update electrical distribution system schematics Perform other duties as assigned Regular and predictable attendance is required Core Competencies: Demonstrate personal integrity and trustworthiness Manage stressful situations and changing priorities effectively Anticipate, recognize and resolve problems Be responsible and accountable Use organizational skills and provide attention to details Maintain a positive, optimistic and success-oriented attitude Exercise professional demeanor, which includes being tactful and courteous Exhibit a professional work ethic Continuously promote a safe work environment 08/08/12 Page 1 of 2 Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge: Minimum Position Requirements: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an electrician OR full journey status as an electrician in a union; OR four years' applicable work experience Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required Specific Position Requirements: Experience in the maintenance and operation of high voltage distribution equipment in excess of 601 volts is required Experience splicing cables, and working with high voltage distribution systems Experience working with Washington State safety rules and regulations pursuant to WAC 296 Chapter 45 Must be a strong team player with the ability to communicate appropriately with clients Possess excellent customer service skills Must be able to respond to system emergencies during regular business hours and outside of regular business hours Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge: Five or more years of experience working with high voltage utility distribution systems Experience in the splicing of lead covered cables Demonstrated ability to work with clients for scheduling utility shutdowns and inconveniences Conditions of Employment: Approved safety shoes must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job A valid driver’s license recognized by the State of Washington is required The position requires working with asbestos containing electrical equipment using appropriate safety procedures The position requires the wearing of other personal protective equipment appropriate to the job task Accomplishment of work requires access to confined spaces and heights using appropriate safety procedures A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire 08/08/12 Page 2 of 2
