Control Technician Lead (Fire Alarm)

Fire Alarm Control Technician Lead
Department Introduction:
Campus Engineering provides professional engineering support for the design, construction, operation and maintenance
of all University facilities. Campus Operations maintains and operates critical building systems including fire/life safety
systems, elevator systems, building environmental systems and controls, central clock systems, high voltage distribution
systems, and a utility shutdown coordination program. Campus Operations also provides emergency maintenance
response service to the Seattle campus community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campus Utilities produces steam,
emergency electrical power, chilled water, and compressed air for the campus.
Job Purpose:
Lead and work with Fire Control Technicians to perform journey-level work in the inspection, testing, servicing,
programming and maintenance of the complex buildings Fire Alarm Systems ensuring regulatory compliance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Lead Fire Control Technicians and other assigned shop personnel in the performance of work
 Develop work procedures and standard operating practices to be followed by assigned shop personnel
 Assign work to personnel, inspect work for quality and completeness; ensure clients are advised when work is
complete
 Troubleshoot and resolve operation and maintenance problems of complex building fire alarm systems and
associated equipment
 Coordinate with EH&S Fire Protection Engineers, department heads, campus engineering, construction
coordinators, contractors, facilities trades, building occupants and other clients to schedule and plan required
work
 Work as a team partner with the Fire Construction Maintenance Specialist on daily basis in a professional manner
at all times to resolve complex fire alarm system issues and associated equipment
 Assist in providing training to assigned personnel
 Ensure subordinates adhere to university rules and procedures
 Inspect contractors' work to see that the work is performed to campus specifications
 Keep detailed records and create work assignments for the regulatory preventive maintenance program of the
Seattle Campus Fire Alarm Systems
 Develop cost estimates for the installation and repair of all aspects of building fire alarm systems
 Be the Capital Projects Commissioning Lead for new and renovated Fire Alarm Systems at the Seattle Campus
 Work as a team member with Capital; Projects, skilled trades leads, supervisors, managers, department heads
clients, EH&S, students, and outside vendors in a professional and cooperative manner at all times
 Be available to work overtime if called upon
 Purchase equipment and supplies for the shop operation, maintenance repairs, and for clients' alteration projects
 Be able to program fire alarm systems
 Direct the duties of non-control technician workers in support of operations of the campus fire alarm systems
 This person will report directly to the Life Safety Systems Manager
 Perform other duties as assigned
 Regular and predictable attendance is required

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 One year of full time experience as a journey control technician, or equivalent trades skill
 Equivalent education/experience may substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal
requirements, such as license/certification/registration
 Experience working with Washington State safety rules and regulations
 Must possess excellent communication skills
 Must be strong team player and must be able to work independently and as a team member
 Must able to respond to system emergencies during regular business hours and outside of regular business hours
 Must possess excellent customer service skills
 Must be able to communicate appropriately with clients, staff and students to present a professional image of the
Signal Systems Shop and Campus Engineering and Operations
 Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
 Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
 Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Five or more years of experience working with complex building fire alarm systems
 Low energy electrical license
 Skilled at Simplex Fire Alarm System programming
 NICET Level II
 Demonstrated ability to work with clients for scheduling building fire alarm system shutdowns and inconveniences
Conditions of Employment:
 Must be able to climb ladders and work in a confined spaces, mechanical rooms, ventilation fan housing, etc.
 Must be willing to work in BL2 and BL3 (shower in - shower out facilities)
 Must be able to work in a diverse workforce
 Must be able to communicate effectively on a portable FM radio
 Must be able to work in the campus tunnel system for extended periods of time
 Approved safety shoes must be provided at the employee's expense and worn on the job
 Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment
 A valid driver's license recognized by the State of Washington is required
 Must be able to work outdoors under all weather conditions
 This position is subject to callback outside normal working hours to respond to emergencies, and routine
scheduled overtime
 Must be able to respond system emergencies during regular business hours and outside of regulation business
hours
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
