Campus Engineering & Operations
Control Technician, Air Balancer
Job Code: 8828 – Contract Classified
Department Introduction:
Campus Engineering provides professional engineering support for the design, construction, operation and maintenance
of all University facilities. Campus Operations maintains and operates critical building systems including fire/life safety
systems, elevator systems, building environmental systems and controls, central clock systems, high voltage distribution
systems, and a utility shutdown coordination program. Campus Operations also provides emergency maintenance
response service to the Seattle campus community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campus Utilities produces steam,
emergency electrical power, chilled water, and compressed air for the campus
Job Purpose:
Perform Journey-level air balancing technician work in the inspection, testing and measuring, balancing and record
keeping on campus building heating, ventilation and fume hood systems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Install, modify, diagnose, test, repair, calibrate and operate a variety of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and
electronic equipment in heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems
 Operate and maintain both pneumatic and DDC control systems
 Respond to resolve client complaints regarding building ventilation, airflow, fume hood and other air balance
issues
 Coordinate with Campus engineers, construction coordinators, contractors, facilities trades, building occupants,
environmental safety technicians, and other clients
 Inspect contractors work to see that the balancing work is performed to campus specifications
 Perform work as a part of preventive maintenance program of the campus building ventilation systems
 Use tools such as drill presses, grinders, hand tools and specialized precision instruments in air and hydronic
balancing applications
 Maintain and update mechanical systems as needed to reflect the changes to building ventilation systems
 Assist in developing cost estimates on air balance jobs for the clients, campus operations and capital project
office
 Follow all University and Facilities Services policies and procedures
 Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the
job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, and use of personnel protective equipment
whenever required
 Attend all required meetings and trainings
 Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Completion of a four year approved institution course as a balancer technician trainee; or four years of applicable
experience in building air and hydronic system balance work

Vocational or trade school training in HVAC balancing may be substituted, year-for-year for work experience up to
a maximum of two years
Equivalent education/experience may substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal
requirements, such as license/certification/registration
Must be a strong team player and must be able to work independently and as team member
Ability to read and interpret blue prints related to building HVAC systems
Possess excellent customer service skills
Demonstrated ability to take direction, work well with the others as a member of a team, and in providing excellent
customer service
Ability to communicate appropriately with clients, students, and staff to present a professional image of the
Facilities Services organization
Must be conversant with Johnson Control Metasys System, Siemens building Technologies Insight System and
Alerton Controls
Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Five or more years of experience working with complex and laboratory building environmental control systems
 Experience with fume hood and bio-safety cabinets
 Certification by the National Environment balancing Bureau (NEEB) and /or certification by the Testing, Adjusting
and Balancing Bureau (TABB)
Conditions of Employment:
 Must be able to climb ladders and work in a confined spaces, mechanical rooms, ventilation fan housing, etc.
 Ability to lift and move heavy material is required
 Must be able to work in a diverse workforce
 Approved safety shoes must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job
 Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment
 A valid driver’s license recognized by the State of Washington is required
 Must be able to work outdoors under all weather conditions
 This position is subject to callback outside normal working hours to respond to emergencies, and occasionally
scheduled overtime
 Must be able to respond system emergencies during regular business hours and outside of regulation business
hours
 Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety procedures
 A tuberculosis (TB) test is required for work assignments in nonhuman primate areas
 A satisfactory outcome from Criminal Background verification is required prior to hire
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
