Waste Collector

Department Introduction:
Building Services delivers Custodial Services to the UW campus that provides exceptionally clean and sanitary environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors and manages the comprehensive Recycling & Solid Waste
Management program.
Job Purpose:
Under the direction of the Program Operations Manager drive the packer truck and collect solid waste and recyclables on the University of Washington’s central campus.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Drive packer truck
Collect garbage from waste containers located on the University's central campus
Load contents into packer truck
Off-load garbage at the City of Seattle North Transfer Station and/or other designated location
Obtain receipt
Turn in receipt to Fiscal Specialist at the end of each work day
Collect cardboard, cans & bottles, and commingled recyclable materials from recycling containers and/or collection locations located around the University's central campus
Load contents into packer truck or collection hopper
Unload at a designated recycling facility
Turn in receipt to Fiscal Specialist at the end of each work day
Clean area around containers and report information necessary to maintaining containers
Sweep up debris and spills following each dumpster collected
Remove posters, handbills, and/or graffiti from containers
Provide ongoing information to supervisor regarding containers requiring extensive maintenance i.e., graffiti removal, repainting, damage repairs, etc.
Provide ongoing information to supervisor regarding inappropriate items disposed of in the solid waste stream
Provide ongoing information to supervisor regarding the performance of the vendor the University has selected to provide additional waste collection services beyond the duties of UW waste collectors
Annotate daily route sheet indicating status of each location (i.e., collected, checked, etc.)
Assist in maintaining University container location maps and departmental program maps
Perform pre-trip vehicle inspections and minor service on the packer truck such as checking tires, filling windshield fluid, and cleaning the interior and exterior of the vehicle on an as needed basis
Ability to operate at two-way radio/cell phone and respond to radio pages within 15 minutes
Assist litter collectors as needed with waste disposal
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
Possession of a valid State driver’s license
Ability to read & write
Physical ability to perform heavy outdoor work
Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
Possession of a valid Class B Commercial driver's license with the air brake restriction removed
Ability to obtain Class B passenger endorsement within 120 days of employment
One year of full-time experience as a Truck Driver or similar work OR equivalent education/experience
Conditions of Employment:
Valid Washington state driver’s license Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with a passenger endorsement and the air brake restriction removed
Pre-employment drug test is required coupled with participation in an ongoing random drug/alcohol testing program in compliance with Federal DOT regulations
Wear approved hearing protection as provided by employer
Approved safety shoes must be provided at the expense of the employee and worn on the job; lifting, pushing, or pulling 0-50 lbs. frequently; 51-75 lbs. frequently; 76-100lbs frequently; 100+ occasionally with assistance
Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment
Hours of position M-F 5:00-1:30pm
A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
