Henson School “Rocket” program: o 2. A Sub-SEM rocket was launchrd from Wallops Island this morning. This is part of a biological experiment put together by Henson School faculty members Gene Williams and Bob Joyner, and their student researchers. This is the culmination of a collaborative project between ODU, SU, IBSi, MIST, and Wallops. University Governance Update: o Student Government Association – Julius Jones: A further update on “The Big Event” held on April 9 was given. There were over 190 volunteers and over 200 bags of trash were removed. The SGA has launched a survey to obtain feedback from students. PAT Meeting May 5, 2005 Page 2 o o o Faculty Senate – Michael O’Loughlin: The Ad Hoc Committee on Pay Policy will bring its recommendations to the next Faculty Senate meeting for deliberation and voting by the general membership. There will be a final report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Curriculum Delivery Models. The written report will be disseminated soon. A new ad hoc committee will be established in the fall, with direction from the Provost, to expand discussion on how SU can deliver a curriculum that will increase intellectual enrichment for students and address appropriate adjustments to faculty workload. Staff Senate – Melissa Thomas: The Staff Senate is currently accepting nominations for Senate and Forum committee elections. Results of the Staff Senate survey are being further analyzed and arrangements are being made for a picnic. Staff training needs are being studied. University Forum – Byron Hughes: 3. The SGA membership will be featured on the cover of the American Student Government Association’s magazine as the Student Government Association of the month. This issue will be available later this summer. The new University Forum chair, Dr. Brent Zaprowski, will take over as of July 1, 2005. Melissa Thomas will be the new vice-chair of the Forum. Byron is working on the transition and gives thanks to everyone for their support this past year. Paul Land, Director, Auxiliary Services: o Paul Land was introduced to the committee by the President. o He provided an update on his first four months. o Dining Services is making improvements on the Gull’s Nest and Pub. They are considering a beach motif for the Gull’s Nest and are working on a collaborative relationship with a pub from Salisbury, England. PAT Meeting May 5, 2005 Page 3 4. 5. International Students update – Robert Hallworth: o International Student Services has a new brochure that will be used as a focus piece to recruit international students. o It now offers two new scholarships for international students. o Rob added that a major goal of the International Education program is increasing participation in study-abroad programs. Memorial for Frank Perdue – Rosemary Thomas: o 6. 7. 8. Alumni Affairs Activities – Jason Curtin: o An update was provided on Alumni activities, including membership numbers, upcoming events, and benefits of membership in the Alumni Association. o Sara Lewis will be completing her term as Alumni president and Eric McLaughlin will be the new incoming president. o A Phone-a-thon for Alumni solicitations has been recently completed. Budget Update – President Dudley-Eshbach and Alan Selser: o A new library and parking garage are in the queue in up-coming years for State of Maryland capital projects. o A University System of Maryland-wide capital campaign is in its quiet phase. Each institution in the System is committed to raise major funding. o The operating budget was updated. COLA and merit pay are in the 2005-2006 budget. Field Day Update – Carol Williamson: o 9. A celebration of the life of Frank Perdue will be held in Holloway Hall Auditorium on Monday, May 9, at 3:00 p.m. Everyone is invited. May 9th carries special significance as it would have been Mr. Perdue’s 85th birthday. Field Day will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2005, at the SU Track and Field. Different types of musical groups will be featured. Welcome Back Week Schedule of Events – Carol Williamson: o Carol provided an update of new events offered to new and returning students in the fall. o Of particular interest is the Freshman Reader Program. The author, Firouzeh Dumas, of the chosen selection, Funny in Farsi, will also be the fall 2005 convocation speaker. PAT Meeting May 5, 2005 Page 4 10. 11. Other announcements: o An update was given concerning the Screening Committee on the Vice President of Student Affairs. The goal is to have the new VP on campus before the start of the new academic year. o Fun Day will be held on September 17. Seventeen student and three staff organizations have already signed up to help. Everyone is invited to attend and/or volunteer to help with events. o Honors Convocation will be held tomorrow, May 6, at 3:30 p.m. in Holloway Hall auditorium. o GED classes are being planned for staff interested in participating. The start date may be as early as the fall semester. o Melissa Thomas offered an update on the Ad Hoc On-line Learning Committee. Additional classes are being considered. o Enrollment is up by four percentage points for pre-registered students. The fall freshman profile has a more widely diverse representation and features a strong academic profile. o SU’s athletic teams have had extraordinary performances this past year. Arts events have been similarly outstanding. o There are two interesting aspects to the May Commencement ceremony: a husband, wife, and mother will be graduating, all with Master’s degrees. Twin students, one from SU and the other from Frostburg, will be able to graduate together this year. In a special arrangement, both will be handed their diplomas by President Dudley-Eshbach at Spring Commencement. o Christopher Tracy, a student from the Perdue School, has been selected to be part of the Alumni Athlete Wall Street Summer Internship program with the Union Bank of Switzerland this summer. Christopher competed for this internship against students from universities such as Yale and Harvard. o Relay for Life has reached another all time high in raising funds, over $107,000 raised.
