Sustainability and Facilities Master Plan Updates – Greig Mitchell and Jeff Downes
o
Efforts to develop and maintain a sustainability program that promotes the use of
environmentally sound development and management practices campus wide are
underway, and continuous. The objectives of this program are to develop a
comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality and to reduce greenhouse gases.
o
The Facilities Master Plan draft will be completed by April 30, 2008. Several highlights
of this plan are as follows:
i. Future building projects, renovations and expansion:
 The new parking deck, to be located on the site of Electric Supply, behind
Hardee’s on Route 13, will begin construction this summer and is
anticipated to be completed next summer.
 The groundbreaking for the new Perdue School of Business will begin
next summer. Anticipated completion is summer 2011. Parking
problems from this new construction should be avoided due to the
anticipated opening of the new parking deck.
 Current on-campus residence halls will be renovated, and new residence
halls, on the main campus, will be constructed. The goal is to have
adequate space available for students who want to live on campus.
 SU will aggressively advocate for funding for a new library, with the
initial goal to have the design money put in the Governor’s next five-year
budget plan. By having construction broken down into two separate
building phases, there is a better opportunity to advance the project with
state funding.
 Negotiations are underway to consider purchasing the Dresser property.
This would add approximately 18 acres to the current approximately 154
acres that house the SU campus. This prime location would be ideal for
housing a performing arts center due to the need for ample parking.
Further south on S. Division a “boxed” field house is envisioned on the
former Shoreland Freezer site.
 A new underpass at the intersection of College Avenue and Route 13
would enhance student safety in crossing this busy highway. There is a
growing trend for students to park at the Dresser parking lot and take the
SU shuttle bus to the main campus.
 There was discussion concerning making accommodations for an arena
type setting that could hold 1000 to 1500 people for big events.
Modifications to Maggs Gym or an arena-friendly design for the
anticipated new Field House were several options considered.
 A Welcome Center with a Spirit shop will be placed at a strategic location
for visitors.
 Throughout all design plans, allocations are made for green space.
