1.
Welcome and Opening Remarks – Dr. Janet Dudley-Eshbach, President
o
The fallout from the allegations of sexual abuse at Penn State University was discussed.
Events such as this should make all of us aware that these situations must be taken very
seriously. Salisbury University will not tolerate any acts that can be considered
harassment or discriminatory. These events, should they occur, will be handled
appropriately, including any legal action if necessary if it has been determined a law has
been broken.
o
Julia Glanz was present as the representative for the new Graduate Student Council.
This group was created as a direct response to the recently revised Board of Regents
policy on Graduate Students and Graduate Assistants calling for them to have a voice
in governance on campuses throughout the System.
o
The Campus Consortium met last week with a great turnout and many ideas brought
forward. This process is on-going, and everyone is encouraged to continue to send

ideas forward to Amy Hasson. The suggestions made are being reviewed, and some
will be implemented immediately.

There will be many activities coming up this week and next – the Veteran’s Day
observance on Friday afternoon, the many NCAA tournament games this weekend,
the Regent’s Cup/Salisbury vs. Frostburg football game on Saturday, and the many
cultural events on campus this weekend including the Dance Showcase.
University Governance
o
Faculty Senate – Dr. Ted Gilkey
i. The Faculty Senate will undertake the second language requirement debate
and put the recommendation through the University Curriculum Committee
(UCC).
ii. At the next Faculty Senate meeting, Dean Pereboom will give a report on the
four credit curriculum model.
iii. The Faculty Senate would like to acknowledge their appreciation to both the
President and Provost for their support of the Faculty Financial Affairs
Committee, for their help on understanding the budget process and including
them in the upcoming Faculty Salary study.
o
Staff Senate – Paul Gasior
i. The Staff Senate’s focus this year will be on improving morale. The last Staff
Senate meeting was postponed until after the Consortium meeting to enable the
senators to hear the issues that concern staff morale.
o
Student Government Association (SGA) – Jessica DiPietro
i. The Student Government Association has quite a few events coming up:

Third Friday on the Salisbury Downtown Plaza is in the planning
stages.

Friday November 11 is the Renter’s Fair, to be held in the Link of
Nations.

On November 28 the SGA will hold a Diversity Forum.
ii. Faculty Staff Appreciation Day will be held on November 17 at 3:30 p.m. in
Guerrieri University Center’s Fireside Lounge. Students are holding this event to
show their appreciation to those faculty and staff who have had a positive impact
on their experiences as a student at Salisbury University. One part of the event
will be a drawing for iPads. For each nomination from a student, faculty and staff
members will earn a ticket to be placed into the drawing box. Faculty and staff
members will also earn one ticket for attending. They must be present to win.

iii. The SGA is currently working on nominations for Student Regent to the USM
Board of Regents.
iv. Recent violence on college campuses in the past few months has inspired a “Stop
the Violence” campaign in the University System of Maryland Student Council.
This civility campaign spans all System institutions to raise awareness among
college students that they can play a positive part in preventing some incidents,
they are encouraged to speak out if they see something that may have the
potential to lead to a violent act.
3.
Fall Events and Faculty/Staff Giving – Dr. Rosemary Thomas
o
Dr. Thomas provided an update about upcoming fall events.
i. Last week’s Homecoming events were a tremendous success. In partnership with
student affairs and other departments, the University provided a welcoming
atmosphere to returning graduates, and past faculty and staff members. Everyone
is encouraged to view the photos posted on SU’s main website.
ii. There will be a ribbon cutting for the opening of the SIM Center to be held on
December 1, 2011 at 11 a.m. located at 106 Pine Bluff Road.
iii. Please consider supporting two separate fundraising events coming around this
month. You should have received a packet for the Faculty Staff giving campaign.
Individuals have a choice of which group would receive their donation, and can
include donations to their own department or projects. The second fundraising
event is sponsored by the State of Maryland, the 2011 Maryland Charities
Campaign. You may contribute by filling in the form delivered to your office and
returning it to Jason Curtin at his SU Foundation office, or by going on-line at
http://www.mdcharity.org/.
4.
Living Learning Communities (LLC) – Dr. Dane Foust and Holly Aumand
o
Dr. Foust provided an update on the success of Living Learning Communities. Living
Learning Communities and specialized living options offer first year Salisbury University
students the opportunity to live with other first year students who have a similar
interest. Resident assistants and faculty members plan special programs and activities
that incorporate the theme of the floor. There are twelve different communities students
can choose from. Listed below are the Communities, their location, and the current
number of students who participate:
 Honors I-Manokin -15
 Honors II-Manokin-18
 STEM -Wicomico-26
 STEM BIO-Wicomico-19
 STEM Nursing-Wicomico-22
 Explorers-Nanticoke-12
 Green-Nanticoke-14

Holly Aumand, a Resident Assistant, for the Education LLC spoke to the group about the
success of the program she coordinates. With the help of Dr. Doug Dewitt in the
Education Department, they have been successful in building a strong team of Education
majors. These students take the same classes, attend the same social events, and live in
the same residence hall. They bond together academically, as well as socially with events
such as a trip to Assateague, a visit to the National Archives in Washington DC, and on
campus socials. The program is looking to expand, and themes that are being considered
are an international LLC, a diversity group, expanded STEM, and a foreign language
group.
An extensive satisfaction assessment was conducted that compared those in the cohort
who participated with an LLC, those who didn’t, and students on a national level. LLC
students outperformed the non- LLC students, who in turn outperformed the national
norm.

6.
Legislative Updates – Scott Jensen
o
Scott noted that Salisbury University has a lot to be proud of with successful programs
such as the LLCs, and the number one rating of the Department of Nursing exit exam test
rates, all to be included in next year’s budget testimony.
o
During the special session the O’Malley administration rolled out what they want to
happen for the regular session – a mini stimulus for job creation. The Governor wants to
propose a gas tax of 15 cents a gallon to be used in the creation and maintenance of the
State’s infrastructure. This could potentially help with increasing funds in the Captial
Funds budget.
o
Scott described the difference between operating budgets and capital budgets, stating that
they are not fungible.
Graduate Student Council – Julia Glanz
o
Julia noted that the Graduate Student Council became one of the four governing bodies on
campus. At last night’s meeting, elections were held. The results were as follows:
President- Julia Glanz, VP- James Russell, Treasurer- Jeremy Smith, and SecretaryDawn Fiore.
o
Issues that this group would like to tackle are: pay raises, health benefits, parking,
orientation, and social events.
o
Julia noted that 60 percent of SU’s graduate students are part-time students, sometimes
holding down full time jobs.
