Log days 6 & 7, Saturdy & Sunday of week 1 Mine Mapping Chris Baker broadcast to m-map a superb summary of our interaction with Black Wolf Mining at Quecreek. One highlight is a digitized plot of the region of our interest at the mines. President Cohon and Chris Gabriel of CMU expressed support for our intention to map the accident site, possibly before the accident investigation hearing. The following is cut-paste communication on this matter: To: William Whittaker <red@FRC2.frc.ri.cmu.edu>, cohon+@andrew.cmu.edu, maureen McFalls <mmfr@andrew.cmu.edu>, cgabriel@andrew.cmu.edu cc: Mary Jo Dively <mjdively@andrew.cmu.edu>, c <chays@andrew.cmu.edu>, a <agale@andrew.cmu.edu> Subject: Re: Quecreek mapping red--sounds like a great idea, and you have my support. are there legal issues, e.g. pending law suits, that we have to worry about? in any event, i'm here to help. --On Friday, August 30, 2002 9:33 PM -0400 William Whittaker <red@FRC2.frc.ri.cmu.edu> wrote: I would like to generate a digital model of the Quecreek/Saxman breach and a map of the adjacent Saxman perimeter to serve the federal hearing on the Quecreek accident to be held in a few weeks. This will provide understanding beyond what is possible with the planned human entries. The hearing is planned by Senator Specter, Senator Rick Santorum, and Representative Murtha. Given the opportunity, we will deliver an exceptional result with style and cooperate with all parties. The circumstances as we understand them are amenable for success. The mine will work with us and support us with enthusiasm, but they do not control their fate during the investigation. The challenge is to communicate the proposal, cut to the chase, generate the commission, and gain insight next week. I'd like your support to make this happen, and my feeling is that if we act forcefully on Tuesday, the recon team that is likely to enter on Thursday or Friday for a first-look would support our planning. Would you assist me in a political request Tuesday, since Maureen is unavailable next week? The breach is likely to be sealed after the investigation, so creating the ground truth model is a fleeting opportunity. In addition to the contribution to understanding, the image might become historically significant, and will serve many purposes from website fly-throughs to promotion of our ideas and technologies. Thank you for supporting the course. Following your comments, we had two recruits from attendees at the event. I'd still like to expand the circle of campus participation. Red Email from team members to me indicates technical progress. Remain conscious of the first major milestone, which is to specify what we will do more than the technical detail of how we will do it. Several requests for personal interaction have reached me, which I will honor Monday. I am open to an informal team meeting at noon Monday at NSH 1109, location of our class meeting.. Feel free to participate. This is completely elective, so don't alter holiday plans. Beyond the meeting Monday, a priority is to prepare a proposal for submission Tuesday. Note that President Cohon's reply includes CMU legal and provost offices, so we should anticipate process as we work our requests. We broadcasting logs to m-map. I am uncertain of maintenance of m-map for add-drops, and whether we are reaching the interests of our extended community. Should we have a broader distribution like m-log which reaches general interest and archives our log?
