Bowral project 3: A curriculum map
Project description
The proposed map comprises a conceptual framework for the
development of cultural competence and a web-based ‘matrix’
and resources that sets out a Sydney University Cultural
Competence student learning pathway encompassing a degree
level curriculum design from first year to graduation.
The matrix is general in nature but interactive and dynamic hence
capable of being designed to fit within a particular degree
structure.

Bowral project 5: Educational professional learning
and development
Project description
This project will design an online PD resource using existing
(internal and external) resources relevant to teaching cultural
competence.
Resources will be curated and incorporated into a suitable online
repository with an interactive web interface for online professional
development.
Inquiry learning activities will be a focus of the resource enabling
wide engagement and application of materials.
Project leads: A/Prof Simon Barrie & Dr Tai Peseta (ITL)

Professional development approaches
1. Reflect upon our professional practices (Boud & Hager, 2012);
2. Understand why they see the world as they do while exploring
the impact of their prior knowledge on newly constructed
knowledge(s);
3. Cultivate a relational and cultural disposition, as an
adaptation of Bourdieu’s concept of habitus;
4. Foster a community of practice to strengthen skills as educators
around deep listening, storytelling and a shared
understanding of what binds people together (Lave &
Wanger, 1991);
5. Support their ongoing, reciprocal, respectful relationships.
