Student employment is an extension of your education. These positions are designed to enhance your
classroom learning by helping you develop the necessary skills required to be successful in today’s job
market and to be a thoughtful and productive citizen. This Plan will not be used as a job evaluation of
your abilities. The goal of this Learning Plan is to help you find extra-curricular activities, work, and
academic experiences that can challenge and assist you in your journey to refine your skills as you
prepare for your future.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
The learning outcomes section is designed to help you develop skills and behaviors that will enhance
your learning in 5 essential learning areas that align to the Grand Valley General Education Program.
Each dimension is defined with a set of qualities that students should possess before graduating. After
reading the definitions, please take time to reflect on each of these areas by the provided questions.
Please be sure to include: academic, employment, involvement, and personal experiences in your selfassessments.
CRITICAL THINKING, CREATIVE THINKING & PROBLEM SOLVING
Critical Thinking is characterized as the exploration of issues, ideas, and events before formulating an opinion or conclusion.
Creative Thinking is the capacity to combine existing ideas, images, expertise, and experiences to work in imaginative ways.
Problem Solving is the process of designing and evaluating strategies to answer open-ended questions. Students competent in
this dimension should be able to make informed opinions, see problems from different perspectives, create alternate
interpretations, identify multiple approaches for solving problems, fully explain and defend decisions, and analyze information.

WRITTEN & ORAL COMMUNICATION
Written Communication is measured as the ability to convey clear messages through handwritten, typed, or online mediums.
Oral Communication is the capacity to show context and personality through verbal messages combined with the ability to
create a prepared and purposeful presentation, speak publicly, and to increase understanding. Students competent in both
areas should be able to utilize proper mediums of communication appropriate for the environment, organize clear and logical
messages, and express ideas using language that meets the needs and expectations of the intended audience.

their own knowledge and expertise to the development of the goals of the group, participate actively and responsibly in group

maintain relationships with people who are culturally different from themselves. Finally, students should be able to support,
