CURRICULUM VITAE GEORG KARLAGANIS Born at 19 December 1944 in Zurich. Married with Verena Karlaganis - Meyer, Pharmacist. Three adult children. Literargymnasium in Zurich. Chemistry studies at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zurich. Ph.D. Thesis with Prof. R. Schwyzer, Institute of molecular biology and biophysics at ETH Zurich. Research career at the Institute of clinical pharmacology at University of Berne (1975 – 1987). Research on cholesterol metabolism at the Department of physiological chemistry of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm with Prof. Jan Sjövall (1979 – 1981). Habilitation at the Medical faculty of the University of Berne (1985). Honorarprofessor of the University of Berne (2004). Since 1987 head of Substances, soil and biotechnology division of the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN. The division is divided in four sections, each having specific duties and activities, all related to the protection of the environment and human beings against potential hazards caused by the use of chemicals as well as pathogenic and genetically modified organisms.
