(EDC 651) Counseling and Guidance for the Classroom Teacher Syllabus of Record Catalog Description: Study of counseling processes applicable to the school setting. Basic principles related to diagnosing, interviewing, listening, communicating, assisting, and referring students for special assistance. Emphasis on relationships of teacher's role in affecting the positive mental health of students. Theories of counseling and behavior change will be reviewed. Three credits. Specialty Program Standards: MDE Counseling and Guidance Services Standards Course Standards and Assessments: Demonstrate in prepared assignments and class discussion, a working knowledge of major concepts of counseling and guidance in the school settings and the principles of a K-12 comprehensive school guidance system based on the American School Counseling Association’s National Standards for School Counseling Programs; Apply current research about school counseling to their own professional interests through both written assignments and class discussions; Demonstrate an understanding of selected counseling theories and techniques such as Rogerian, Constructivism, Behaviorism, and Brief Solution Focused Therapy.
