Human Embryology & Developmental Biology (5th Edition, 2013) by Bruce M. Carlson
Course Description and Content:
The focus of this course is on the anatomy of vertebrate embryogenesis with specific emphasis on
humans. Topics include fertilization, implantation, gastrulation, neurulation and organogenesis of a
variety of structures.
Course Goals and Objectives:
The primary objective of this course is to introduce students to developmental anatomy of the human
embryo. Students are expected to understand and describe anatomical and morphological changes that
occur during human development.
Lectures:
All lectures will be in PowerPoint format. PDF files that contain lecture slides are available on
Blackboard.
Course Requirements:
In this course students will be required to 1) attend lectures, 2) take unannounced quizzes, and 3) take
3 lecture exams and a comprehensive final exam.
Lecture Exams:
Each lecture exam is worth 100 points. The final exam is comprehensive and worth 200 points. The
lowest of the three midterm exams (except final exam) will be dropped when calculating the final
grade. Lecture exams are worth 400 total points.
Each exam will include a combination of multiple choice, acronyms, true/false, matching, short answer
questions.
There will be unannounced quizzes worth 10 points each during the semester that will be based on the
reading assignments. Quizzes, homework and attendance are worth 100 points.
Grades:
Final grades are assigned based on a total 500 points.
