SURVEY OF LEHIGH VALLEY REACTION TO THE 10th
ANNIVERSARY OF THE TERRORIST ATTACKS OF
SEPTEMBER 11th, 2001
KEY FINDINGS REPORT
September 12, 2011
1
PART ONE
KEY FINDINGS:
1. Ten years after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 Lehigh Valley
residents have become less concerned about the possibility of a similar attack
affecting themselves or their families, yet a significant portion of Valley
citizens have continued to alter aspects of their life since the tragic events of a
decade ago.
2. A majority of the residents in Lehigh and Northampton Counties approve of
the way that President Obama is handling terrorism, but only about 1 in 3
residents thinks the United states is winning the broader war on terror.
3. Nearly 1 in 3 Lehigh Valley residents indicated that they are less willing to
fly than they were before the 9/11 attacks. While this number remains
substantial it is only half the level set in the weeks after the attacks in 2001.
4. While most local residents do not expect an attack on the scale of the 9/11
strike to occur in the next year, a majority anticipate such an attack to occur
sometime in the next decade.
5. About 3 in 10 survey respondents acknowledged that their views about ArabAmericans have changed since the attacks of a decade ago. With Republicans
more likely than Democrats or independents to have had their views about
this group altered by the events of 9/11.
6. A majority of residents in the region report that they are willing to sacrifice
some of their personal freedoms to gain increased protection from terrorism,
yet most also think the federal government has taken away too many rights
in its effort to combat terrorist threats.
METHODOLOGY: The following key findings report summarizes data collected in a
telephone survey of residents of the Lehigh Valley between August 30th and September
6, 2011. Individual households in both Lehigh and Northampton counties were selected
randomly for inclusion in the study. The sample of phone numbers used in the survey was
generated by Genesys Sampling Systems of Ft. Washington, PA. Interviewing was
conducted by the staff of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion and PMI of
Easton with 421 surveys completed. This number of completions results in a margin of
error of +/- 5.% at the 95% confidence interval. Percentages throughout the survey have
been rounded upward at the .5 mark, thus many totals in the results will not equal 100%.
The survey questionnaire was designed by Christopher Borick, Ph.D. of the Muhlenberg
2
College Institute of Public Opinion in consultation with staff members of the Morning
Call. Analysis and report writing were completed by Michael Wiener of the Muhlenberg
College Institute of Public Opinion under the direction of Dr. Borick.
SECTION ONE: Opinions on Terrorism: A Decade Later
Ten years after the devastating terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, the
lingering effects of that day continue to impact the attitudes, beliefs and behaviors of
residents of the Lehigh Valley. While there has clearly been a shift in the level of
concern regarding terrorist attacks since those frightening and confusing days after the
terrorist strikes a decade ago, the marks of that day can be seen in the results of this
survey of Lehigh Valley residents.
Over the last ten years there has been a steady decline in the percentage of Valley
residents expressing a high degree of concern about terrorism directly striking either their
family or themselves with only 14% of Lehigh Valley adults indicating they are very
concerned about this possibility. This marks an 18 point decrease in the percent of local
citizens maintaining high levels of apprehension regarding this matter since September of
2001.

Despite relatively few Valley residents indicating that they are very concerned for the
personal and family safety, local residents are split among political party and gender
about whether they feel a risk from traveling to major cities such as NYC or flying on an
airline. For example the series of Tables 2 through 4 provide insight into the views of
3
Lehigh valley residents regarding willingness to travel by air. Table 2 illustrates the trend
as related to willingness to travel on an airline while tables 3 and 4 illustrate political
party and gender differences for the same question. Nearly 1 in 3 Lehigh Valley residents
indicated that they are less willing to fly than they were before the 9/11 attacks. While
this number remains substantial it is only half the level set in the weeks after the attacks
in 2001.

Notably, Republicans in the Lehigh Valley are more likely than their Democrat and
independent counterparts to indicate that they are less willing to board a plane since the
terrorist strikes of a decade ago. Similarly, females in the region are more likely to avoid
air travel than males, with 36% of women stating this position in comparison with only
26% of men.

SECTION TWO: Opinions on those of Arab descent in America after September
11, 2001.
Ten years after the terrorist attacks orchestrated by Osama Bin Laden, Lehigh
Valley residents are still split as to whether the attacks changed their view of Arabs in
America. The chart below shows that there has been a six point drop in those that say the
attacks have changed their views in those of Arab descent in America.

A closer analysis of this question showed a split between how those of different political
party and those of different age groups answered this question. The crosstabs for each are
below. 43 % of Republicans interviewed said that their view of individuals of Arab origin
that are American citizens or residents changed because of the 9/11 attacks. This is 8
points higher than Independents asked the same question and 16 points higher than
Democrats.

SECTION THREE: Presidential Handling of the War on Terror
Those Lehigh Valley residents interviewed have shown a higher approval rating for how
President Barack Obama is handling the war and terrorism in comparison to how
President George Bush was handling the situation in 2006. Besides the change in
President, these past five years have also seen an exit strategy for US troops in both Iraq
and Afghanistan and the killing of Osama Bin Laden by Seal Team VI in May of 2011.

Valley residents approving of Obama’s handling of his job.
SECTION FOUR: American’s Rights: How many rights should Americans
sacrifice for protection from terrorism
A section of the survey dealt with whether respondents were willing to give up
some of their rights so that the American government could better protect its public form
terrorist attacks. The survey also asked questions about whether actions taken in the past
had restricted the American people’s constitutional rights too much or the necessary
amount to protect this country from future terrorist attacks. Below are various crosstabs
that analyze responses to these questions in the survey, both when these questions were
compared with each other as well as against a variety of demographic questions.

Table Eight shows a strong correlation among Lehigh Valley residents that were
surveyed who were willing to give up some of their rights and those who thought that the
government had not violated too many of their rights. Conversely, there is also a strong
correlation between those who think the government has gone too far and those who are
not willing to give up their rights.
