This policy section is taken from the GVSU Drug and Alcohol Policy and is regulated by the Michigan Liquor
Control Commission

All alcoholic beverages must be provided by Grand Valley State University, which is
required to purchase alcohol from authorized and licensed distributors.

No alcoholic beverages are permitted in the Kirkhof Center other than those offered by
GVSU.

Alcoholic beverage service is licensed only for the Grand River Room, Pere Marquette,
221/2216, Thornapple, the Solarium and the Lobby. Alcoholic beverages may be consumed
only in these approved areas.

Alcoholic beverage service is available for scheduled events only with specific invitation for
invited guests of the function. Service is not open to the general public.

The Kirkhof Center liquor license does not allow the sale and consumption of beer and wine
on Sundays. Only hard liquor may be served during an event on a Sunday.

Alcoholic beverages, whole or in part, may not be removed from the Kirkhof Center grounds.

Alcoholic beverages shall not be sold or furnished to a person unless the person has attained
21 years of age. Proper picture identification is required.

Grand Valley State University reserves the right to withhold alcoholic beverage service to
any individual or group.

Alcoholic beverage service must end by 11:30 pm.

Michigan Sales tax of 6% will be charged for all alcoholic beverages.

Designated driver programs are encouraged.
There are several options to choose from for alcoholic beverage service at the Kirkhof
Center. These options are listed below, followed by an explanation of charges
associated with alcohol and bar services.

HOST BAR
The client is responsible for paying for all guests’ beverages. The client will also pay
bar service fee.
There are two options if you choose to have a host bar.
1. Full host bar: beer, wine, soda and mixed drinks
Client is charged per opened bottle based on consumption
2. Partial host bar: beer and wine or beer, wine and soda
Client is charged per opened bottle based on consumption
CASH BAR
Guests buy their own drink tickets to redeem at the bar. A cash sales minimum must be
met. The client will be responsible for the remaining balance, due the night of the
event, if their cash bar does not generate this minimum sale. The client will also pay the
bar service fee per guest. This charge does not apply to the cash sale minimum
requirement.
Beer and wine are $3.00 per glass or bottle. Mixed drinks are $4.00 per glass.
There are 3 options if you choose a cash bar:
1. Full cash bar: beer, wine, soda, and mixed drinks
$500 cash bar sales minimum
Client is charged for:
 Deficit in cash bar sales if minimum is not generated
 Bar service fee
2. Partial cash bar: beer, wine and soda
$500 cash bar sales minimum
Client is charged for:
 Deficit in cash bar sales if minimum is not generated
 Bar service fee
3. Cash/Host bar: beer, wine, and soda on a host basis with mixed drinks on a
cash basis
$300 cash bar sales minimum
Client is charged:
 Per opened bottle/keg for wine and beer based on consumption
 Deficit in cash bar sales if minimum is not generated
 Bar service fee

Outdoor bars at Alumni House will require disposable drink cups.

Optional Table Service
For wine and/or champagne service
 This option provides direct service to each table, for either wine with dinner
service, or a toast with champagne. A bottle of wine/champagne will be placed
on each table - guests may serve themselves.
 Bartender services may be required for table service. All bartender service
policies and pricing will apply.
Payment
Payment for all alcoholic beverages is due immediately following the event. This
includes any per bottle charges for a host bar. You will be invoiced for these charges
when the bar closes and payment is due at the end of the event. A 6% sales tax will be
charged to all alcoholic beverages. Payment can be made by cash, check or credit card.
