In the libraries - Who? Librarians Education technicians Multimedia designers 27th IATUL CONFERENCE Oporto, Portugal, May 22-25 2006 Planning the Factories - What? - Physically located in a library - Technology rich environment - Integrated into traditional library services - Access to full range of software - Collaborative learning and workspaces - Explicitly aligned with the institution-wide vision - Non-library centric involving other campus units - More emphasis on the creation of knowledge 27th IATUL CONFERENCE Oporto, Portugal, May 22-25 2006 Present situation 11 factories functioning on UPC campuses 22 support staff with training in creating multimedia material Activities carried out in 2004 488 activities of support to teaching improvement projects 40 teaching materials developed 3 training courses 54 UPC user units Co-funding of 98 projects presented to obtain grants for teaching innovation We helped another catalan University to implement a service like our own, called also Factoria 2004 report: http://bibliotecnica.upc.edu/factoria 27th IATUL CONFERENCE Oporto, Portugal, May 22-25 2006 Some examples - Multimedia course with animations about Energies and Environmental Science: Link to the material - Self-assessment on Descriptive Statistical Methods, applied to Industrial Scheduling Link to the material - Multimedia course and videos about Optical Correlators Link to the material 27th IATUL CONFERENCE Oporto, Portugal, May 22-25 2006 Main Problems 1. It was not part of the Strategic Plan, can it works anyway? 2. Creating change before, during or after the project? 3. How many policies we have? 4. We use no standards: Dublin Core, SCORM, XML… neither UPC templates 5. Can we obtain the same results with a no-cost policy forever? 27th IATUL CONFERENCE Oporto, Portugal, May 22-25 2006 Conclusions 1. The scope of the university library is changing again. We must be able to create information, if possible as publishers, apart of the traditional services. 2. We have gained some users that have never come to enjoy the traditional services . 3. Creating a service like the Factory means an essential part of the effort of library staff. 4. Always there is the possibility to create materials following a line, a template; useful for the majority of our users. 5. Enthusiasm is not the main part of the success. 27th IATUL CONFERENCE Oporto, Portugal, May 22-25 2006 Thank you Between thought and expression… There’s a lifetime Lou Reed 27th IATUL CONFERENCE Oporto, Portugal, May 22-25 2006
