Mrs. McGehee’s Class News
News from 2nd Grade!
It’s hard to believe we’re nearing the end of our
first quarter!
We have a great class! I enjoy working, talking,
laughing, & watching them grow each
day!
Here are some reminders for you:
Keep up the great job reading and returning the reading minutes
folders on Friday. Several have reached their 500 minute reading goal
and some are almost to 1,000! Also, thank you to Beth Scruggs and
Kelly Donohue for recording reading minutes! Read, Read, Read!
Marvelous Math
Skills we will be focusing on this month:
Understanding place value, counting numbers on a number grid, fact families,
open response story problems, problem solving (addition and subtraction),
fluency in addition and subtraction facts, counting number patterns, greater
than/less than/equal to, and expanded notation
Technology
We will be using the “Typing Pal” program in the computer lab to
teach correct positioning of our fingers for keyboarding skills. We
are also using the computer lab for STAR reading assessments, RazKids and other online reading sites, phonics reinforcement and to
practice our math on everyday math online.
In class, students interact with the Smartboard and document
camera daily. We will use our classroom Chrome Book computers
for research, Raz-Kids and word work activities.
Reading, Phonics, Comprehension, & Language
Arts
We will continue working on our consonant clusters and vowel sounds in writing
and reading, counting syllables, using our high frequency words correctly in
sentences, making sentences using possessives, using commas in sentences,
writing friendly letters, creative writing, contractions, nouns, verbs, adjectives,
identifying main ideas, distinguishing between fact and opinion, use alphabetical
skills, dictionary skills, and practice tracking our thinking while reading
independently.
Social Studies
The students will continue learning about communities. We are also using maps,
practicing using map keys, the compass rose, parts of a globe, using directions,
and charting and graphing skills.
Writing
Students have time for writing every day. They recently
picked their first books to publish and are in the process
of editing. This month we will have lessons on sticking to
the topic, focusing on capitalization and end punctuation,
using logical order (beginning, middle, end), organizing
our thoughts, and using our senses when we write and our
imagination!
Land and Water
We have been learning about the water cycle.
Students have been introduced to new vocabulary
such as, evaporation, condensation,
accumulation, and precipitation. Students are
participating in hands on experiments as well as
recording data in their Science Notebooks. This
month we will also be learning about erosion and
how water changes the shapes of landforms.
