“Reading a book is like re-writing it for yourself. You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms.” – Angela Carter Making Connections Making connections to stories help children relate to a story by activating “stuff” that they already have in their head. Connections fall into three broad categories: Connecting text to self Connecting text to text Connecting text to the world Allow your child to visualize and ask questions to help him/her make connections to the text. After reading a story to your child, have him/her tell you what they liked about the book and illustrate their own ending to the story. “What if the gingerbread boy got away from the fox, what would happen? If you were the fox, how would you catch the gingerbread boy?”
