The data collected using time-use approach provide comprehensive description of lifestyle of individuals, in terms of how they spend their time in different human activities.
Time-use statistics essentially comprise of Data on time spent by individuals–
On all forms of remunerated and unremunerated ‘economic work’
On work not considered ‘economic’ and
Other human activities.
2
The initial efforts of conducting time use survey in
India, go back to as early as 1970s
In 1983, the National Council of Applied Economic
Research (NCAER) conducted a time-allocation study on a sub-sample of Employment and Unemployment
Survey conducted in the 38th Round (1983) of the
National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO).
A pilot survey on time-use was also conducted by the Directorate of Economics & Statistics,
Government of Tamil Nadu during 1996.
3
The Central Statistical Organisation (CSO),
Government of India, conducted a Time Use
Survey in 1998-1999
It was a pilot survey and was conducted in six states viz., Kerala, Meghalaya, Haryana, Madhya
Pradesh, Orissa and Gujarat.
In this survey, fairly detailed data were collected on time spent on non-market productive activities, particularly the extended SNA activities, and on purely non-economic activities, besides economic activities.
4
TUS in 1998 – 1999 was mainly conducted with a view :-
To assess the contribution of the women & men in the national economy through unpaid household work
To study the gender discrimination in household activities
As -
Household unpaid work - unaccounted & unrecognized
Mostly performed by women
5
About 18600 households spread over six
States ( Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat,
Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Meghalaya) were covered
The data was collected from each member of the selected household aged 6 years and above about the activities he/ she has done during last 24 hours
6
The days in a week were categorized as normal, weekly variant and abnormal
The entire survey was spread over four subrounds of three months each to take care of the effect of seasonality
The tables generated give the weekly average time spent in different types of activities according to various background characteristics like age, sex, place of residence, level of education, economic activity status
7
To capture the individual response on the time use pattern
All the activities to be categorized into activities pertaining to System of National Accounts
(SNA), Extended SNA and Non-SNA.
A new classification was developed for that survey
8
The activities were grouped into following categories:
SNA ( Productive and Economic) Activities
I. Primary production activities
II. Secondary activities
III. Trade, business and services
Extended SNA Activities
IV. Household maintenance, management and shopping for own households
V.
