October News for Miss Allen’s Class
The theme for the month of October will continue to be All about Me. We will begin the month with a unit
on Personal Safety with an emphasis on Fire Safety. The children will learn how to keep themselves safe in
case of a fire. The next three weeks will be a unit on fall. The key measures are fall is a time for
harvesting and change. There will be an emphasis on apples and pumpkins.
Language Arts- follows 2-3 step directions, speaks and dictates complete sentences, tells what happens
first, middle , and last about an event or activity, begins to use journals and transitional spelling ,
recognizes sentences in written material, distinguishes rimes and onsets , begins to recognize the beginning
sounds of the alphabet, distinguishes between reality and fantasy in literature , identifies plot, characters,
and the setting of a story, traces, copies, and generates letters, answers questions ,makes predictions, draws
conclusions after reading and/or listening to text, identifies simple synonyms and antonyms (i.e. hot/cold,
rainy/sunny ).
Early Literacy concepts-Hearing words in sentences
Phonological Awareness-Hearing and identifying rhyming words, matching rhyming pictures, hearing
saying and clapping syllables, hearing and identifying beginning sounds.
Letter Knowledge-Recognizing and naming upper and lower case alphabet letters
Math-helps to create and explain simple graphs, recognizes and names spheres and cubes in the real world,
helps to create and interpret simple patterns, counts orally to fifty and
Backward from twenty, constructs sets 1-20, and estimates the number of objects in a set.
Social Studies-Develops competence recognizing safety hazards and taking action to protect self.
Develops Acquires experience identifying important Americans in legends i.e. Johnny Appleseed.
Science. Acquires experience observing and describing characteristics of weather and seasonal changes.
Acquires experience measuring.
Thank you for doing the weekly Homework with your child. I do need folders returned daily. You may
go to starfall.com for additional reading activities. Sight words are available on my web site. The Everyday
Mathematics web site and access code will be available this month. Parental support is needed to
reinforce curriculum.
