MRS. ANDREA H. DAVIS Weekly Newsletter November 6, 2015 THEME: All About Me UNIT: Personal Safety EXTENSIONS: Fire Prevention Key Measure: I know how to keep myself safe from fire. Dear Parents, Learning about FIRE SAFETY this week has been a hot topic! I hope your Kindergartner has urged you to get serious about making a fire escape plan in your home. We worked with several math and language games to increase awareness of fire safety. We learned that a good time to change the battery in your household smoke alarm is on your birthday each year. For some highlights from our week, read on... LANGUAGE ARTS LISTENING: At the Listening center, we listened to the rhyming book on tape, FIRE! FIRE! said Mrs. McGuire. There were several sight words in this book that we could recognize. Ask your child what was funny about this book (there was a MRS DAVIS in it!) SPEAKING: At work time the students played a board game involving the kids saying a word that began with the letter the fire fighter landed on. Your partner could help you think of a word, if needed. PHONEMIC AWARENESS AND PHONICS: In another table game, a fire fighter saved a cat from a tree by moving up a ladder with letters on it. A plus or minus die was used to help the fire fighter move toward the cat. The students thought up and said a word ending with the letter s/he landed on. WRITING: The students went on a word search. They wrote the sentences they found by searching around the room. We are trying to remember to use a finger space between words and copying the letters just as they are printed. READING: We read these books: Clifford the Firehouse Dog, I’m going to be a Fire Fighter, Smokey the Bear, TheTrue Story of Smokey the Bear, The Little Fireman, New York’s Bravest, Fire Truck, Firehouse Dog, My Fire Engine, and Dot the Fire Dog. SOCIAL STUDIES We watched a great video called “Smoke Detectives” that taught us to practice E.D.I.T.H. or Exit Drills in the Home. The children learned helpful facts such as: staying low in a smoke filled room and checking the door for heat before opening it. If the door is hot, put a cloth under it to keep smoke out. Exit thru a window if possible. Do not hide! You must escape! Join the family at a planned meeting place. Do not go back into the house for any reason. Don’t be afraid of fire fighters even though they can look kind of scary. The class loved the video! MATH The students matched numerals this week when they counted the number of spots on the fire dogs. SCIENCE We talked about the fact that smoke rises to the ceiling, so the safest way to get out of a room during a fire is to be close to the ground. We practiced crawling as quickly and as safely as we could across the floor. This was funny! ART VISUAL: We made Smokey the Bear sack puppets. MUSICAL: We played a racing game while wearing fire hats. There were several numerals written on the chalkboard. When a numeral was called, sa a group of kids raced to the chalkboard to put the fire out (they erased the correct numeral) while the whole class chanted, “Put the fire out! Put the fire out! Cheer, cheer for number __?__ and put the fire out!” MOVEMENT: We discussed and acted out STOP, DROP & ROLL. Have your child show you this important skill. DRAMATIC PLAY: We pretended to be Fire Fighters, fighting a downtown Tulsa fire. When our fire station # (large numeral recognition) was called over the dispatch we put on our fire hats, raced to the burning buildings, and sprayed the flames with our pretend fire hoses. TECHNOLOGY We worked a Jigzone.com puzzle of something burning. Ask what the puzzle was (a burning match). We are getting faster on the smart board. FYI Please label all coats, jackets, gloves and hats that are worn to school. Please don’t send gloves and hats until they are really needed.
